2020.09.28 21:33 j08_j08 The Lapporten Project - Mission 1

Abisko highline project ~1.95-2k (shared world record)
Main objective of the trip and project was to:
(1) Get together as a team and scout a massive and iconic line in the Abisko area.
(2) Rigg a 2k highline in the valley of Vaimovággi to the east.
(3) Let as many as possible walk it
(4) Send it.
On the 9th of September, we rigged a beautiful Highline over the east valley that in the end measured about 1.95 - 2km. The autumn colours de-rigging are mind-blowing in these parts of the world and the spot was really remote in the mountains. Wind conditions are changing quickly out here and we aimed for a fast operation of rigging and derigging when a suitable wind window would arrive. Team: Annalisa Casiraghi (Italy) Ariel Cicero (Argentina) Adrien Montcoudiol (France) Cesare Mazzocchi (Italy) Chanty Alvarez (France) David Sjöström (Sweden) Friedi Kuhne (Germany) Grzegorz Hoffmann (Poland) Jojo (Denmark) Julian Caleau (Argentina) Martin Gravdal (Norway) Mathias Rohdin (Sweden) Olle Romberg (Sweden) Ruben Langer (Germany) Quirin Herterich (Germany) Trygve Brundtland Hønsen (Norway)
Due to hard winds, sections of tape on the Y2K getting ripped off the next day and making the highline oscillate in the first 200 meter sections proximate to the anchors, and with a forecast of strong winds coming in during the night, we decided to take it down after only having it up for 25 hours. Quirin Herterich sent the line onsight in good wind conditions the first night, Julian Caleau crossed one time in increasing wind and Ruben Langer crossed one time in good winds and one time in strong wind conditions (next level machine).
We had a problem with the Sky Diamond webbing stretching more than expected so the backup (even with 5m extensions) became tight all across the line. This will be adjusted for the next project. We do believe though that this 17mm webbing has the benefit of being very light and creating less wind surface area while also being soft and a nice walk, compared to other high tech webbings which tend to be quite sharp and prone to pick up wind.
Rigging: The valley was chosen since it was possible to lay out webbing almost from anchor to anchor in sections and then lift up and tension. After the anchors were done, we rigged and tensioner the whole line in about 5-6 hours. Taping was done mostly on the loooooong and epic train ride from Stockholm.
Derigging: When the wind started picking up the team derigged 2km webbing in 90 minutes, by use of a premade detensioning system to lay down the line, disconnecting the sections and efficiently coiling them up.
Webbing: 200m Y2K extending from each anchor for ease of use while pretensioning in standard weblocks. Remaining middle 1.6km was 17mm Sky Diamond.
Send: Quirin Herterich, 1hr and 40 min Name of the line: Stockholm Syndrome
Cross: Ruben Langer 1hr 30min and 1hr and 40min Julian Caleau 1hr and 50 min
Safety: We had a total air traffic restriction area issued for the dates. No lights or flags. Mountain rescue was informed and supporting the project. Both anchors had prepared rescue plans to access the athlete on the line and lowering the line down.
Media: The media attention for the scouting operation and the valley 2k line has been great and the project was on the biggest channel's 9pm news. A dozen newspapers have also done interviews since our upcoming July 2021 project is at a very iconic and emotional Scandinavian object. The project is now known nationwide which is fun and slightly unexpected. Budget: Minimal. Besides personal transportation about 3k euros for all. Sponsors: Breathe Slackline sponsored the food, webbing costs and transport. Spider Slacklines offered us the Sky Diamond setup to use and return. The Y2K came from the Slacktivity team to be returned. STF (The Swedish Tourist Association) gave us two cabins for two weeks to stay. Tents from Bergans Tentipi from Nordcirkus Dry food from REAL Turmat Coffee from Loutsa Torréfacteur Some food came from Ica Röstånga. The local helicopter base Kallax gave us a 10% discount for transportation of gear.
Weather: We installed and used a Holfuy weather station on the top of the peak to better understand the weather on the peaks compared to the camp in the valley. This will also be used for our next project in 2021, collecting data for winds. This weather station can be used and borrowed until then by the community. Lessons learned: * Rigging and de-rigging fast is crucial when doing wind-exposed projects like this. We have a new system for this under development. * After derigging and having secured the line due to hard winds, it's good to keep the line intact and ready to tension again when a new good weather window returns. * We had old tapes in the y2k sections and decided to keep them, but it was a mistake since they broke in the strong winds. The new tapes including a middle layer of glass fiber tape held perfectly. If we had redone all tapes we might have been able to have it rigged for much longer. * 17mm high-tech webbing like Sky Diamond seems promising for long highlines due to lightweight and less wind surface area. Scouting for 2021: The scouting of the massive and iconic line for 2021 was successful and the team will be coming back in the midnight sun of July 2021 for a big ambition challenge!

2020.09.28 21:30 cscqsim_repostbot Got a job

Was furloughed in March and basically was beside myself. My company used legacy java technologies and I had not kept up on doing side projects and interview prep. I have a BS in CS from a top 40 school and just that ~2 years experience, but not much else going for me (I am 29 by the way). I basically did. Nothing the first 3 months. I just avoided thinking about it (savings + enhanced unemployment will do that to you). It wasn’t until July where my situation really hit me. I honestly thought that my life was done. I started not being able to sleep, went into tutorial hell, really thought about hurting myself. My employer started rehiring some of the engineers but didn’t call me. I called him and asked to come back- but after a back and forth... they just ghosted me. A real ego killer.
At the end of July I started reaching out to my network (I knew this was going to be my best choice). Fortunately I got 2 bites. I knew though that I needed to get in a better space before I could take advantage (I was able to push them to September).
This is the part I am writing this post for:
I started talking to a therapist on FaceTime. This has been the most important part. If you are unemployed (and have the resources to do so) and feeling down- DO THERAPY. Maybe you didn’t slip as far into depression as I did- but it will help you no matter where you are at. Even if your fears are real (I don’t have the skill set, I will have a huge gap on my resume) a therapist can help you develop counter examples for your brain to work with.
Practical advise: People told me- “just do the interview- even if you fail- you will get better”. If you are like me, not super up to date skill set and in a highly competitive geographic location, don’t do this. The market is hard right now. Don’t waste these chances(this is my pandemic advise- during normal times it might be different). I did interviews in non software positions to just get used to talking about myself and well honestly as insurance (I wasn’t sure I could get a cs job)
Target resources that give you great conversational ability for software. The book “Web Scalability for Startup Engineers” (highly reviewed on amazon if you don’t trust me) really helped me nail this. Being able to talk like a developer is important. This book makes it easy but isn’t remedial. You are going to be on a video call with people and this book (or books like it) will help you be able to drop little things here and there.
The person who set me up with the job that I ultimately got was the one I would have never expected. Use all your cards. Look past any petty/ego shit- and just call them (I know phone calls are not IN- but try to at least do that- no email etc). Talk to them. A lot of people want to help.
This point is a bit weird- but it honestly worked for me. If you can find out who is interviewing you- research them. Get a sense of who they are (some people share a lot online). USE that info. Don’t be a psycho about it- but maybe make some guesses about the kind of people they connect with. Be yourself- but play the game... it’s a pandemic.
If you are unemployed. Accept that you can’t change into your ideal self rn. Just get a job. If you are bad at algo questions- don’t try to become “amazing”. Level up a bit... but remember you are who you are (at least right now). There is a place for you- as you are right now (or I should say who you are right now- with a few manageable upgrades)
I am not perfect. I am not up to date on everything. But I concentrated on a depth of knowledge, remembered that personality is IMPORTANT, did a few easy/medium level questions for practice, and got a 95k offer.
You will get this! I really hope this helps (even if it’s one person). I read this page a lot during my unemployment and wanted to give back. Definitely not saying this is one size fits all.

2020.09.28 19:11 oofboi2002 Please critique my very long story if you have the time and patience to read it :) Even if its a nuclear criticism lay it on me.

As I stood at the dock’s edge, gazing at the tempestuous sea I couldn’t help but wonder why I had decided to come to this desolate rock. Could it have been a fickle attempt to escape the everyday humdrum of life? Or had some enigmatic force of fate brought me to this rickety atoll? My dismal rumination was abruptly quelled by a stout hand clapping my shoulder, my thoughts still roared as I turned to see the briny barge captain who had stirred me. He must have noticed my vacant stare because he immediately led me to a musty wooden tavern not thirty yards away from the dock’s cragged edge.
As we ambled through the swinging saloon doors I began to grasp how meager this hamlet was. My inattentive thoughts were jarred by the bartender gruffly asking for my drink of choice, I simply abstained myself which elicited a grumble from the chapped man. As I sat in the bar, I could feel manifold sets of eyes scouring my slouched shoulders. I could hear hushed voices redound off the rotting walls “Looks like a fresh continental.”, “Come next barge he’s gone go back home cryin’ to mama.” I stood from my seat and left the peculiar locals to their swill.
I noticed a filmy patch of fog rolling through the cobbled stone streets. As I looked back to the dock I noticed the vessel that I had arrived on was now a distant mote on the horizon. I began combing the stark streets for any refuge that didn’t contain unsavory locals or fetid scents. As I strolled through the fog the warm effulgence of oil lamps illuminated a small chain bound wooden sign that merely read “INN”.
As I entered the lobby, I saw that the inn was well lit and unsoiled by rot or water damage. As I strode to the end of the reception area I noticed a golden service bell on the edge of a glossy wooden desk labeled “Check-In” I rang the small bell and not a second later a small elderly woman scooted from a small curtained room to the side of the desk opposite me. I examined her face more closely to see keen exuberance in her eyes as if I were an old friend she hadn’t spoken to in some time. “Hello, my name is Ida, and welcome to my Inn. How long would you like to stay my dear?” “I’ll stay for a week.” I said reluctantly, I had no idea when the next ship would come to this port and the locals are no help whatsoever. “Wonderful!” she croaked “So many continentals come to stay here, my business has been booming since I opened four years ago.” This comment confused me greatly because the keyboard behind her was completely full. “This way young man you’ll be staying in room 3.” The woman quickly shuffled up a flight of burnished wooden stairs to reveal a carpeted hallway with 5 rooms on each side. “You said your business was booming…” I alluded “…but the other rooms are vacant.” Ida smiled at me and asserted “The other patrons left the village to get closer to the island.” This statement perplexed me, “This place is so bleak. Why would anyone want to make a home here?” I thought to myself as Ida’s face receded with the closing door.
My room was a spacious 40 square meter box with red curtains covering immaculate double windows. I took to lying down on the cushy king bed so that I could reflect on my circumstances comfortably. After some ephemeral solitary deliberation, I heard a feeble knock on my door. When I opened the door there stood the slightly wilted figure of Ida, but this time she was holding a small sheet of paper. “Since you’re going to be here for a bit, I thought you might want to know this town’s history.” The paper had a picture of a gaping cave entrance that gave me a disconcerting chill. I gripped the pamphlet, but the woman maintained her grip. “Watch yourself when you leave your room you hear? The folk who live in this town are the least of your worries.” She then released the brochure and retired to the lobby. The leaflet described the founding of the town by a small fleet of European trading ships that were immobilized by a severe tropical storm that devastated the area. These settlers lived on the island for nearly a century, but one day a military vessel docked, and the men were astonished to find the settlement and the entire island to be empty. It was as if the people had vanished into thin air. Soon the settlement was repopulated during the Industrial Revolution in hopes that the island had hidden riches to strip and sell to the highest bidder. However, many of the prospectors reported seeing pale slick headed figures stalking the dark inlets of the cave system. These legends were never confirmed, and no lives were lost until one day the miner’s exit had a massive cave in and hundreds of men were killed along with the island’s economy. The island is now a secluded community that feeds itself with the sea’s bounty. As I flipped to the back of the handout, I found a map of the island with important locations corresponding to its history each marked with a crudely written title and small “x” to specify. My eyes scanned the map I saw a small gray patch of land near the watery center of the atoll. The patch was marked “Murky Grotto”, this was the location that was pictured on the front of the pamphlet and the site where the cave-in occurred. I flipped the paper back to its face and studied the maw of the cave closely, I’m positive I saw something in that cave. I could feel the hand holding the picture drifting closer to my face until I could see nothing but the darkness within.
My vision was completely darkened by the picture, but when I moved the photo away from my eyes, I realized that I was no longer in the warm hotel room. I was totally enveloped by inky blackness on all sides, the only thing my senses could interpret was the biting chill in the air and the faint dripping of water. My heart jumped from resting to throbbing against my rib cage. As my breath became faster, I began to hear clumsy footsteps accompanied by ear-shattering wails and erratic cries of primal rage. I couldn’t tell what was making the peculiar noise, but all I knew was that it was getting louder and therefore closer. I reduced my breathing to remain completely silent. I could feel its frenzied breath on my face. Standing before me was what may seem human, but this beast was coated and continuously secreting a sickly lemon-colored mucous, sporting a near melanin free outer membrane, the eyes must be completely worthless as the beast does not acknowledge visual stimuli its bulbous and milky eyes seem to be an evolutionary mutation as useful as the human appendix, the mutant also didn’t have a single visible hair on its body. The mutant’s physical condition is questionable,, to say the least. Much of its body was simply gaunt deformity. The torso is mostly stretched thin skin over protruding bones. The mutant’s prominent facial features include its lack of a nose, instead it has two nostrils nestled in a small facial ridge where its nose should be was. The mutant’s ears are also embedded into its head rather than protruding. My blood ran cold as the creature’s dead eyes bulged while it silently stood in front of me, baring its rows of deformed teeth in my face almost as if it knew it was standing inches away but preferred to taunt me instead. I began to slowly inch away from the mutant as quietly as possible step by step. However, my fear overtook my footing as I backed into what must have been a thick stalagmite and began to plunge to the floor. As I fell, I could see the creature aimlessly swiping toward me, the monstrosity wore a tattered black cloak, but no shoes. The creature’s feet were densely webbed to the point where what would be toes were nearly fused together. The last thing I heard before I collapsed was another spine-chilling scream coming from the creature.
I shot up from lying down, once again blind for a moment until the small pamphlet flaked off my face and into my lap. My body was shaking immensely as I tried reassuring myself that I had just fallen asleep and had a terrible nightmare, but I could feel the dull flow of adrenaline through my body. I sauntered into the bathroom to use the sink to cool my sweat laden forehead, as I refreshed myself, I chuckled because I had gotten myself so worked up over a stupid nightmare. As I dried my hands however I could feel something warm running down my neck, I used a few sheets of toilet paper to clear my sweat, but as I brought the paper to my face to examine the amount of sweat my vision began to blur as I saw that I had not cleaned sweat off my neck rather the wipe was stained red with fresh blood. I stumbled into the stand-in shower and activated the tepid flow of water. I faced the shiny silver floor drain as I watched diluted blood swirl into the pipes below just trying to distract myself from the I implored myself to think of any logical answer other than the repulsive possibility that was slowly pushing its way to the forefront of my mind. “The nightmare.” I blankly uttered. Soon afterward the blood stopped flowing down my back and shoulders and I stepped out of the shower shaking profusely even though the temperature was better than most showers I’ve used. I threw myself toward my duffel bag to retrieve my meds. “Don’t think about it. None of it makes sense so don’t delude yourself by trying to make it logical.” I chanted as I downed my medicine with a swig of water I spread myself across the bed, staring up at the ceiling with my mind still racing, but eventually my medication eased my mind enough that my heart resumed its normal resting pattern. I was determined to stay awake until I could convince myself that I was just anxious about staying in this eerie hamlet. I soon pushed it to the back of my mind and decided that I would go back to the tavern and look for a guide and something to eat. As I descended the stairs, I could see that the old woman was nowhere to be found in the lobby, so I simply left a generous payment for the weeks lodging next to the cramped guest ledger. I took a closer look at the paper to notice that Ida was in fact right that many travelers had come to the inn, however, there was a column marked “Room Status” and every single name except for mine was marked vacated on the same date and within the same hour. This confused me at first, but I then realized that these people must have come together, perhaps they checked out to explore the island’s entirety.
As I left the Inn I was again greeted with thick fog and dark skies. As I returned to the coast where I arrived I felt a few raindrops hit the nape of my neck as thunder rolled in the distance. I stopped before I entered the bar again because I could once more feel eyes on my back. I turned to see a man dressed in a navy-blue police uniform with an aged 1911 pistol model on one hip and a sleek nightstick on the other. The man raised one of his gloved hands and motioned for me to come closer. As I approached I saw the man’s gaunt features, his eyes were baggy and dark as his suit, immense stress markings on his forehead, and an unsightly scar stretching from his left commissure to the corresponding earlobe. “Hello son, you’re the new cont’nental arrived yesterday right?” he coolly inquired, “Continental?” I quizzically asked, “Everyone keeps calling me that, but I don’t know what it means.” “Means you’re from the mainland, means they don’t trust you neither. These folks only care for their own and don’t take well to outsiders meddling with their traditions.” The officer said overly nonchalantly. “I noticed that they weren’t very fond of me as soon as I walked into the bar. Do the locals even speak to newcomers unless they have to?” I inquired genuinely regretting not stepping back onto the barge instead of being distracted by the queer community of ruffled fishermen. “Most folk just keep a sour look til’ newcomers get the message.” He punctuated his sentence by grabbing a small canteen and taking a swig of what I assumed was water. “Do you know when the next barge will come here? I made a mistake staying here and I need the first boat back to the mainland.” The officer chuckled and looked at me as if I had told him a joke he had heard many times before. “Next barge carrying general good’s comin’ in 13 days. Til’ then you’re stuck on this berg.” My heart sank as I had enough money to last that period, but I was reluctant because of the lack of activities since I was technically a second-class citizen to the locals. The officer surely noticed my expression because he put his white pristine white glove on my shoulder and stated “I know it’s inconvenient son, but the locals don’t want nothin’ to do with the mainland less’ they can’t find it on the island. The only boats the locals own are small rowboats nd’ they only use em’ for haulin’ fish n’ firewood.” “Say…” he blurted “…I’ll bet you haven’t got a tour of the town yet. How’d you like a po-lice escort, son?” “Sure.” I relented “But how much of this dinky shantytown is there to tour?” I mentally scoffed. Instantly after I accepted his offer the officer turned 180 degrees and began rigidly marching down the street opposite of the bar. The thick fog gave the officer a strange appearance, his dark figure seemed to push the fog to his side while my thin frame was seemingly consumed by the syrupy haze. The officer suddenly stopped and clicked his polished shoes together to face the second-best kept building I’d seen “This’s the general store, here’s where most of the goods from the barge go.” “Finally!” I thought “I don’t have to go to that dingy bar to get food and drink. I thought I’d never find a store here.” The officer began to say something, but I was only interested in the small wooden shelves freshly stocked with ample instant food that only requires water, seasoning shakers, various tools, and various fishing gear and accessories. I grabbed a small paper bag and filled it with instant food and some bottled water. However, the cashier stopped totaling my items when I opened my wallet and took out a couple of 5-dollar bills. “Sir you don’t have enough capital for your items.” the man groaned “You need more than ten dollars for some lousy instant food and bottled water?” I griped. The man started to respond but closed his mouth as I felt a familiar feeling on my shoulder. I turned to see the officer with a small but smug grin on his face “We don’t accept continental cash here son.” he ribbed. I then noticed both men had small canvas sacks attached to their belts, the officer removed his and took out a few slimy segments of what looked like fish scales. “I’ll pay for your food this time ‘round, but we don’t use no paper money with nobody but the barge captain.” The cashier shot the officer a quick grin, but his expression changed to a scowl when he returned my bag of items. As I walked down the creaky wooden steps the officer snickered “I was tryin’ to tell you we ain’t got any use for mainland cash, do us both a favor and let me finish next time.” Embarrassed and agitated by how obsolete my savings were in this backwater I simply nodded my head at the officer and dreaded having to return to the Inn and be confronted about my useless money. The officer continued his foggy march through the town showing me the town hall, small woodworking shop, and finally a cramped post office. As both of us exited the building I noticed that the rain that had only been a drizzle earlier was beginning to intensify. The officer turned to me and said “That’s it for the important places here. Now if you want me to show you a good place to see the beauty of this here island, we can make it there and back before the rain gets too heavy if you wanna take a gander.” Not caring about either the rain or how much time it took I agreed to follow him once more. As usual, he began marching up the cobbled streets, but when we reached the end of the road he didn’t break stride for a moment despite the unruly grass and bumpy terrain. We eventually reached and traversed an outlandishly symmetrical plateau. The top of the highland was shaped like a hexagon. When I averted my gaze from the odd highland I was greeted with the serene sight of the watery center of the atoll and the distant curve of the rest of the island. As both of us gazed in silence I made out what looked to be a protruding rock face with a dark yawning maw. As I looked closer I could see what looked like a line of figures filing into the mouth of the cavern. My trance was cut short by the policeman nudging me and pointing to the center of the band “That water there goes down deeper than any man could ever go. Locals go out and catch fish there, folk say that the deeper you go the bigger the catch.” The man then mumbled something to himself that was near indecipherable from what I heard it sounded like he mentioned something called “The Deep Sleeper”. He then turned to me as if he had said nothing at all and yapped “Whelp! We best get back ‘afore the storm gets nasty.” On the way back through town the officer did not march confidently as he had previously, he continuously turned his head to look at me until we reached the Inn as if he were looking at my expression to determine whether or not I had heard his preceding utterance. “Hope you had a hoot on the tour! Come by the town hall if anything’s troubling you. The locals may not acknowledge you, but just know I’m here night r’ day if need be.” he insisted. “Thank you officer…” “Name’s Tate, just give me a holler if you need anythin’” he jovially repeated. As Officer Tate departed, he resumed his austere march, not once looking back or breaking his stride until he disappeared from my sight.
My body fluttered as I left the cold streets and entered the toasty lobby. Instead of a vacant front desk, Ida was reading quietly at the end of the room. I strode to the desk to apologize for using outmoded currency, but instead of anger the senior matriarch gave a warm smile and politely said “The locals may use those stupid scales, but I still use mainland currency because that barge not only brings patrons but supplies to keep my Inn in the sterling condition it’s in now. You don’t need to worry about those gross scales here young man.” Relief washed over me as I thanked her profusely as I lumbered up the stairs with my groceries.
When I finally locked my room door I was ready to sleep some time in this dingy town away. Soon after I killed the lights I was enveloped in the thick curtain of sleep. I was awoken this time not by a nightmare, but by the sound of a door being continuously pounded on. At first, I groggily wrapped my pillow around my ears, but the pounding didn’t stop so I shifted out of bed and into my shoes. The blows were growing in intensity to the point where I believed that the entire door would break. As I cleaned out my sleepy eyes I listened for the sound of Ida, hoping that she would rebuke the antagonist, but the beating continued uninterrupted. Now irritated with being awoken by some instigator I swung my door open to catch the aggressor by surprise, but there was not a person in sight. I paced the length of the hall and every door was locked and the hall was barren of life. The more I thought about the situation the more irate I became, I stormed back into my room closing the door and went to sit on my bed, but as soon as my door was shut the pounding came back in full force, but this time the sound had switched locations. The unit next to me was shaking with the thundering boom from the sheer force of the blows. My body began to tense in anger as I whirled around to my door and again threw it open to find no life or unlocked doors. Thoroughly enraged, I walked to the sink to cool down. As I was splashing water on my face my blood began to boil as the booming sound was now coming from my door. I slowly crept to the threshold readying myself for a possible fight with some punk, but before I opened the door I decided to look through the peephole. However, as I focused my eye I could only see pitch blackness as if the hole were being covered, so I threw the door open with more force than I’ve ever mustered only to be greeted with cold murky darkness.
My stomach felt like a deflating balloon as I recognized the echoing drips of water hitting the cavern floor. I held my breath waiting for the same depraved creature to begin its horrid patrol, but the creature did not come. My eyes soon adjusted to the darkness enough that I could see outlines of the cold stone bulwark, as I felt my way along the icy walls my foot kicked a small metal object. I slowly moved down to pick up what I had kicked, the object was a metal cylinder with a small rubber button on one end “A flashlight!” my brain exclaimed. With the click of a button, the dingy cave was bathed in a radiant glow. The cave was adjoined to what seemed to be my Inn room, out of curiosity I pulled the curtains in the room and was met with cold stone on the other side of the double window. Dejected, I scanned the cave for any sign of an opening. As I walked out of the room, I spotted a small dried bloodstain nearly two meters from a small stalagmite. There was no explanation other than the inane theory that not only are my nightmares connected but that these bizarre occurrences are in some way rooted in reality. The very thought made my brain begin to pirouette in blighting befuddlement, I could not stand to come to terms with such an absurd reality lest I lose my mind. As my flashlight shone on a far wall, I could see an exit from this godforsaken room, but as I approached the outlet I noticed the frame of the exit had chiseled petroglyphs of three heads. There were two heads on each support of the exit; at the lowest point was a glyph of a man, above him was a glyph of the pale oddity I encountered the night before, but at the top of the frame held by the beams was a carving of a giant beast with tendrils preceding its mouth and a cephalopod shaped head. The very sight of the squid-like beast chilled my very bones causing me to shudder like an abject recreant, but as promptly as I averted my eyes the feeling subsided. I recommenced my trek through the dank tunnels discerning only the sounds of rocks I dislocated ricocheting off the floor, every few minutes I’d hear mortified screams echo off the ceiling for it only to be met with primal bellowing and eventual silence, and the ever-rhythmic oozing of freezing water from all directions. The dreary grotto seemed to impede the constancy of time itself as I found myself endlessly wandering through dead end after dead end, destroyed refuge after destroyed refuge. I began to wonder as more and more unknown amounts of time passed what about eating and drinking? I had to have been in the hole for more than 6 hours, but I never felt the sharp pang of hunger, the slow parching of dehydration, nor the burn of muscle fatigue. After plenty of trial and error, I came to a fork in the path, as I looked to the right my gag reflex triggered as I heard gut-wrenching screams for mercy followed by frenzied wailing saw the floor was caked with dry blood and littered with bones from all parts of the human body and with one cursory smell I was inundated with the stench of decay. The path to the left was clear of any debris, and I could see a dim light illuminate the cave wall farther down the path. As I walked down the path I could feel frigid goosebumps radiate from my neck to my toes, my very eupnea felt like ice in my lungs, and yet my breath remained unseen. When I came near the light on the cave wall I peered my head around the corner only to see a stone brazier lit with a flame as blue as the depths of the sea itself. The flame burnt endlessly without tinder or fuel of any kind, I tried to warm myself with this fire, but as I drew nearer my blood grew colder and my body quivered more fiercely. I was astonished by this simple defiance of my fickle reality.
I kept walking the path, distancing myself from each brazier as much as possible, but after passing the fifth brazier I could hear distant voices echoing off the walls, but I couldn’t decipher the muted murmurs that reverberated from wall to wall. As I grew closer to the voices I desperately wished to call for help, but those thoughts were admonished with the searing reminiscence of the path I repudiated. Would I be dismembered and picked clean if I so much as alerted one of the inhabitants? I wasn’t going to take that incurable risk, as I drew closer to the speaking figures, I could clearly hear what they said, but they spoke in a guttural consonant laden tongue that was not the least bit decipherable. I peered around the corner to see two men in black tattered cloaks standing on either side of one of the braziers chanting continuously. I watched curiously as the men looked to be in a trance of some sort, but the men suddenly rolled up their sleeves to reveal countless laceration scars some healed, others infected, and some fresh. As I was gawking at their many skin carvings both men unsheathed otherworldly daggers that measured about 20 centimeters, my stomach tensed as I watched them dig the blades into their wrists and hew down to their elbows. The men didn’t cry out in pain or even grimace as they tilted their lacerated arms into the bowl of the brazier, and as their blood cascaded into the bowl the men continued their chants. Suddenly the fire in the bowl changed into water, but still moved as if it were scorching flame. The men then submerged their lacerated arms into the water and affixed their forearms, after doing this the men started to cry out in ecstasy. Following this, the men removed their arms from the bowl and began to stumble about with their eyes rolled back in unmitigated euphoria. In mere seconds the men were slouched against the wall, made comatose by otherworldly bliss. As the second man closed his eyes I crept past, warily navigating the twisting stone tunnels I stumbled across scores of hooded figures who took part in the same macabre ceremony all splayed on the floor arms still spurting sticky pools of blood.
After the twentieth duo of masochistic freaks, I stumbled upon a massive clearing adorned with stone statues of the hideous winged cephalopod deity fraught with hooded figures, each was wearing wooden ceremonial masks fashioned to please the grotesque cephalopod creature. These cultists knelt around an ominous black obelisk that was pulsating gleaming energy seemingly due to their worship. Looking beyond the cultists I could see mighty pillars of white-hot lightning mirroring off the water’s surface that flowed from the center of the atoll, I’d have to cross the entire stone mezzanine and exit down a slab of stairs. As I began navigating my way toward the back of the cave, I grimaced at the mere audition of these chanting to their god in unholy unison. As I crossed the mezzanine directly behind the cultists, I noticed that this sect of mutants were the same humanoid beasts from my previous calamity, none of the figures wore shoes and their feet were also densely webbed. I knew I had to move quickly and carefully if I wanted to keep my skin as I approached the top of the staircase, I took a deep breath and began to surge down the stairs. I made it nearly halfway down before I heard a gut-wrenching wail coming from the depraved mutants below. I began to descend faster as most of the masked mutants didn’t move a muscle, but those who did began howling like tortured animals toward me. As soon as I hit the last stair I broke into a sprint for the mouth of the cave, but as I darted past the depraved creatures, I felt the ground begin to rattle and fissure, while the walls and ceilings begin to collapse upon. There was no time to waste in escaping from the depraved followers, I could hear their psychotic babbling as if they were close enough for a ride on my back. I felt the adrenaline numbing my every stride as I reached the edge of the cave’s gaping aperture and dove into the cloudy waves. Never had such cold and bemired water felt so liberating or invigorating, but even as I fled I could feel tremors rattling the very depths of the island. I slowly clambered out of the water to try and gather my bearings, but as I glanced upward I saw portentous black clouds fiercely merging into a whirling waterspout over the atoll’s center. The very earth beneath me rifted into fragments of dust infertile dust, cragged walls of lighting were hurled from the sky to destroy the wildlife, and in the distance, a tidal wave the size of the island came raging toward the island. As I lay in the grass I gazed at the waterspout, but as time passed the waterspout went from gargantuan to dwarf. But as the waterspout halted I witnessed a bulbous mass of gray flesh begin to rise from the water, I could feel an icy chill in each of my atoms as I watched the protracted tendrils rise from the murky depths. The cephalopod horror seemed disappointed that he had been freed to erase such a pathetic race of shallow mortals, and yet when its blistering red gaze met mine my lucid psyche howled in sanity searing anguish as I beheld The Deep One reclaiming its celestial cathedra as the harbinger, the lone horseman of mind-bending Armageddon. As the tidal wave drew fatally close to the island I took a deep breath of salty ocean air and closed my eyes accepting my fate. Just as I heard the wave make landfall I jolted awake and gasping for air in a deluge of my own sweat.

2020.09.28 17:47 WifiPassword12345 I am 25 and I am starting to love myself and be happy for the first time in my life

Lately I (25m) have been feeling overwhelmed with emotion. I kind of expect nobody to read, I just wanted to get it off my chest.
I was pretty badly abused as a child, but I never really realised it until I started sharing stories about it with my partner about 5-6 years ago. I was surprised again recently when a relationships mod deleted a post about my parents and told me to go to abuse (this was quite a surprise to me). My family immigrated when I was 4 under some pretty rough circumstances. In grade school, I was a violent problem child who was constantly getting suspended. In high school, I became the outgoing popular kid. My group of friends were the adventurous ones at the school. We'd skip school to go fishing, do every drug under the sun, explore abandoned places, and set off fireworks when/where not allowed.
Once high school ended, I had a strange moment. I suddenly realised that I had never been not depressed. Through school I had often spent the night crying on and off until late at night, sometimes until sunrise. I had felt lonely at home, so at school, I had made sure I was never single for long. I never thought of myself as depressed before, but now that I had no friends or school to keep my occupied, I found myself becoming suicidal. I alienated my girlfriend at the time despite her best efforts to be emotionally supportive and ultimately killed the relationship.
Then university came. I think that I went into university with very poor self-esteem because my parents frequently put me down (pretty severely), people would reference the fact that I was an overall littler guy (for the record I'm 5'6-7" and 120-40lbs), and I feel like others were never considerate of my feelings because I always presented as confident and outgoing. I had dated about half a dozen to a dozen girls in school, and weirdly enough I had never been rejected by a girl before. But for some reason, once I got to university I found myself facing constant rejections. I also discovered (I didn't know this before university) that I look younger than I am, so much to the point where my friends and I once visited a strip club for a birthday and I (and only I) was subjected to near-constant insults and harassments by other patrons about how I looked underage. It was emasculating to the point where I paid $300 for a private room with a stripper just to hide away while my friends had fun, and the stripper called me gay for not getting hard for her (this hurt even more because I hadn't yet come to terms with my bisexuality because of my religious upbringing).
At some point, I started tutoring one of those girls that had rejected me, and got sucked into her friend group. She had this best friend that I had stalked on Facebook and found extremely attractive. But at this point in my life, I felt like I was unable to acknowledge any girls existence who was above a certain attractiveness threshold. The first time I met this friend in person, she said hi to me but I didn't look at her, say anything to her, or acknowledge her in any way. A few months go by, and I end up having dinner one day with that original girl's boyfriend and this other friend. I sat across from her, and I had never really seen her from up close and I kind of avoided looking at her. But now she sat across from me, and she was literally the most gorgeous person I had ever seen. Almost the entire time, she seemed to keep her eyes glued the TV that was in the restaurant, even while engaging in conversation, so I didn't feel as self-conscious about looking at her. I decided to follow-up on some of the conversation that night, and we really hit it off. Later on I asked her to go grocery shopping with me. I couldn't really invite her to do anything else because I was actually broke as fuck. That strip club story from earlier? I was actually homeless during the semester that happened, and lived out of friends' places and the library. We went grocery shopping and I walked her home. We talked in front of that building until literal sunrise, and I have never fallen for someone like that or that quickly. She invited me to stay the night but holy fuck it didn't feel right (I also hadn't been able to wash my socks in months).
We eventually started dating. I asked her out, and she responded by asking me why I wanted to date her. I started stammering something but she kissed me before I could really say anything substantial. Insecurity set in pretty early. Basically everyone I knew commented on how out of my league she was, sometimes even strangers in fucking public, like jesus christ people cut a guy a damn break. I showed her lots of affection but I kind of kept physically distant because I was paranoid about creeping her out. Almost a month goes by, and one day, she tells me she thinks I find her unattractive because I hadn't tried to get into her pants yet. So I tried to oblige her and couldn't even get it up (this was only the 2nd time I had erection trouble in my life, the first time having been when I was about to lost my virginity). We had discussed our sexual histories and it became clear that I had more of a history, so this happening made her feel inadequate. I guess this caused her to make this next mistake. She told me that mine was the fifth penis she had touched and that I was the smallest. I had considered myself above average, because I am, so this was kind of a devastating moment. She later apologised, saying that she thought I was confident enough to handle it, that she realised that she said it in an insensitive way, and that it wasn't even true (apparently I was actually the second smallest lol). I have accidentally said things that have hurt her body confidence too, but you can imagine that this had a complicated effect on me combined with all of the other circumstances.
Our relationship moves forward. I never really shake this feeling of inadequacy until pretty recently. We've been through plenty of drama together. One time someone called the cops on us when we were arguing in public, and even though nothing happened, she got scared (I'm a person of colour and she is white) and told them that she hit me thinking she was getting me out of trouble, and ended up getting herself arrested instead. She supported me through a stint at a very stressful and exhausting 50-hour construction job. The biggest challenge was still to come however. I went to law school, and ended up getting bullied the shit out of. A lot of it had to do with the kind of poor characters that law school tends to attract. Let's just say that law school is a place where big egos reckon with mediocrity. I was younger than most of my classmates, I looked even younger, I knew all 175 of my classmates by name, I was the guy who always asked questions in class, and I was this little guy with all this big dick energy and a super hot girlfriend. The hostility from certain 30+ year old white males was, let's just say it wasn't that subtle. I ran for president of the student council and a whole bunch of the older (white) students attacked me for being a nazi, they said I was trying to "Trump" the student council just because I thought most of the stuff that the council spent money on was shit that almost nobody cared about (because clearly cutting spending = fascism). They also dug up the fact that I had been a senior staff at one of the (top 5) biggest right-leaning news outlets in the country, as well as a really old facebook comment taken out of context in which I used a homophobic slur, and used these as a reason to corner and heckle me in the halls of the school. They would yell, talk shit within earshot, and one 30+ year old "woke" boy made a clear racist remark to me with my fiancée right beside me.
I had a psychotic breakdown, the depression became more severe, and I got suicidal to an extent I hadn't experienced before. I desperately started reaching out for help and got put on all sorts of medications, sometimes several at a time. I began to develop all sorts of addictions, and my mental health reached such a low that I literally couldn't even recognise faces anymore. I caught myself talking to a stranger on the street thinking that they were someone I knew. The only thing that got me out of bed in the morning was my fiancée making me breakfast. She was rock solid through all of these years, and I honestly believe some bad shit would have gone down had I not had her by my side.
I had a best friend from undergrad, who was my first best friend. I never got close to people growing up and later in my life I learned that I am on the autism spectrum. We helped each other connect the dots in terms of childhood trauma, did a lot of drugs together, and talked almost all day almost every day. Towards the end of school, I knew that it was time to shake all of the addictions I had acquired and work on other personality flaws, both original and acquired. This best friend and I had unfortunately spent the years falling into a mentality of victimhood and helplessness, and I had to leave this behind. He had a fiancée of his own, and while mine spent the years trying to pull me up, his dragged him down and they seemingly couldn't stop digging a deeper psychological and financial hole for themselves. At the end of law school, after having spent years in relative social isolation with only one or two close friends, we got married and moved back to the city where we originally met (for my job), and started hanging out a lot more with friends that we hadn't hung out with for a long time. My wedding gave me such imposter syndrome it was insane.
I never had much capacity for a lot of social interaction growing up, but having talked with this guy all the time for years, I got used to constantly having a friend to talk to other than my wife. Out of boredom, I started rekindling friendships and my wife and I found that we were able to get very close to others and quickly develop strong and supportive relationships.
I always thought she was too good for me, and while I was in the dumps, this insecurity caused me to go so far as trying to sabotage the relationship. While I loved her, it was so anxiety inducing to think that I was so dependent on someone I so sorely didn't deserve, especially during law school when I really had no psychological capacity to be a giving partner. Watching her interact with people in a group made me fall in love with her all over again.
People say we look amazing as a couple, but honestly, she would make anyone look good. The thing with her is that any guy she stands next to automatically looks like a fucking catch. My insecurity started surfacing when I started wondering if any of my friends could have been a better partner to her than I had been for those 3 years. Insecurity gave rise to jealousy, which I quickly channelled into emotions of gratitude and desire. This gratitude has been an absolute steroid in terms of improving my personality. I feel that I have been given so much that I have a nearly unlimited capacity to give back.
One day, I began to look back at how far I had come. I have almost become the kind of person that I always wished to be, and I have almost become the kind of husband that my wife deserves. I can't describe this emotion of feeling like a good partner, to perhaps the only woman on this earth who could have turned me, of all people, into decent husband material. As soon as I truly felt "no, I don't need to be insecure about not being good enough; and yes, I am capable of being the man she deserves," it was like I discovered that I had been living a lie for 25 years.
I thought I was a lazy person, but that was just an excuse to be lazy because I always got the task done when push came to shove. I thought I was ugly, but realised that this was based on literally no evidence other than society's slight bias against baby-faced men. I thought I was short and small, but nobody else notices that past my giant personality unless they're jealous of something. I feared that I didn't have enough penis but the one person whose opinion matters thinks it's long, very thick, with exceptional stamina, and next to some big swinging balls. I thought I was unkind, but I was choosing not to be kind out of fear that my kindness would not be reciprocated. I felt like she felt judged for being with me, but she has always gone lengths to show that she was proud to be mine. What was I so damn insecure about? We're living in a day and age where society tells us that our problems our not our fault, our thoughts are out of our control, and our fate is based more in luck than agency, but that's all bullshit. You direct your actions and are ultimately the master of your own destiny, at least in terms of what kind of person you grow into.
I got reddit for the first time pretty recently, and it's become obvious to me that my self-loathing was far from unique. Neither were my insecurities, their irrationality, or the way that they manifested themselves in my life. I really don't expect anyone to have made it this far, but if you did, I hope you learn to untangle the web of lies we tell ourselves in insecurity. I hope that you come to the conclusion that we stop ourselves from feeling good about ourselves because of past hurt. I hope you don't prevent yourself from building up your self-esteem out of fear for the unpleasant surprise of having it knocked back down.
I never thought I would find this feeling or come to this place in my life, but I dearly hope that your journey takes you there as well.

./play.it 2.12: API, GUI and video games

./play.it is a free/libre software that builds native packages for several Linux distributions from DRM-free installers for a collection of commercial games. These packages can then be installed using the standard distribution-provided tools (APT, pacman, emerge, etc.).
A more complete description of ./play.it has already been posted in linux_gaming a couple months ago: ./play.it, an easy way to install commercial games on GNU/Linux
It's already been one year since version 2.11 was released, in January 2019. We will only briefly review the changelog of version 2.12 and focus on the different points of ./play.it that kept us busy during all this time, and of which coding was only a small part.

What’s new with 2.12?

Though not the focus of this article, it would be a pity not to present all the added features of this brand new version. ;)
Compared to the usual updates, 2.12 is a major one, especially since for two years, we slowed down the addition of new features. Some patches took dust since the end of 2018 before finally be integrated in this update!
The list of changes for this 2.12 release can be found on our forge. Here is a full copy for convenience:
  • New options:
    • --output-dir: Set the output directory for generated packages
    • --overwrite: Replace packages if they already exist
    • --icons: Allow including icons only if dependencies are present
  • Wrapper changes:
    • Drop $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR from the candidates for temporary directories
    • Prevent scan of unneeded directories
    • Drop script identification by MD5 hash
  • Archive-related changes:
    • Only extract needed files when using unzip
    • Allow to use renamed installers
    • Add support for LHA archives extraction
  • Engines-related changes:
    • New engine: ResidualVM
    • New engine: System-provided Mono runtime
    • DOSBox: Use $PLAYIT_DOSBOX_BINARY in launchers if defined
  • Packages-related changes:
    • Add ability to set variables for package-specific postinst and prerm scripts
    • Arch Linux: Improve consistence of 32-bit packages naming
  • New helper functions:
    • version_target_is_older_than: Check if the game script target version is older than a given one
    • toupper: Convert files name to upper case
  • New generic dependency keywords:
    • libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0
    • libglib-2.0.so.0 / libgobject-2.0.so.0
    • libmbedtls.so.12
    • libpng16.so.16
    • libopenal.so.1 (alias for openal)
    • libSDL2-2.0.so.0 (alias for sdl2)
    • libturbojpeg.so.0
    • libuv.so.1
    • libvorbisfile.so.3 (alias for vorbis)
    • libz.so.1
  • Codebase clean-up and improvements:
    • Massive rework of all message-related functions
    • Drop hardcoded paths for icons and .desktop launchers
    • Use system-specific default installation prefix for generated packages
    • Forcefully set errexit setting on library initialization
    • Use dirname/basename instead of built-in shell patterns

Development migration

History

As many free/libre projects, ./play.it development started on some random sector of a creaking hard drive, and unsurprisingly, a whole part of its history (everything predating version 1.13.15 released on Mars 30th, 2016) disappeared into the limbs because some unwise operation destroyed the only copy of the repository… Lesson learned, what's not shared don't stay long, and so was born the first public Git repository of the project. The easing of collaborative work was only accidentally achieved by this quest for eternity, but wasn't the original motivation for making the repository publicly available.
Following this decision, ./play.it source code has been hosted successively by many shared forge platforms:

Dedicated forge

As development progressed, ./play.it began to increase its need for resources, dividing its code into several repositories to improve the workflow of the different aspects of the projects, adding continuous integration tests and their constraints, etc. A furious desire to understand the nooks and crannies behind a forge platform was the last deciding factor towards hosting a dedicated forge.
So it happened, we deployed a forge platform on a dedicated server, hugely benefiting from the tremendous work achieved by the GitLab's package Debian Maintainers team. In return, we tried to contribute our findings in improving this software packaging.
That was not expected, but this migration happened just a little time before the announcement “Déframasoftisons Internet !” (French article) about the planned end of Framagit.
This dedicated instance used to be hosted on a VPS rented from Digital Ocean until the second half of July 2020, and since then has been moved to another VPS, rented from Hetzner. The specifications are similar, as well as the service, but thanks to this migration our hosting costs have been cut in half. Keeping in mind that this is paid by a single person, so any little donation helps a lot on this front. ;)
To the surprise of our system administrator, this last migration took only a couple hours with no service interruption reported by our users.

Forge access

This new forge can be found at forge.dotslashplay.it. Registrations are open to the public, but we ask you to not abuse this, the main restriction being that we do not wish to host projects unrelated to ./play.it. Of course exceptions are made for our active contributors, who are allowed to host some personal projects there.
So, if you wish to use this forge to host your own work, you first need to make some significant contributions to ./play.it.

API

The collection of supported games growing endlessly, we have started the development of a public API allowing access to lots of information related to ./play.it.
This API, which is not yet stabilized, is simply an interface to a versioned database containing all the ./play.it scripts, handled archives, games installable through the project. Relations are, of course, handled between those items, enabling its use for requests like : « What packages are required on my system to install Cæsar Ⅲ ? » or « What are the free (as in beer) games handled via DOSBox ? ».
Originally developed as support for the new, in-development, Web site (we'll talk about it later on), this API should facilitate the development of tools around ./play.it. For example, it'll be useful for whomever would like to build a complete video game handling software (downloading, installation, starting, etc.) using ./play.it as one of its building bricks.
For those curious about the technical side, it's an API based on Lumeneffectuant that makes requests on a MariaDB database, all self-hosted on a Debian Sid. Not only is the code of the API versioned on our forge, but also the structure and content of the databases, which will allow those who desired it to install a local version easily.

New website

Based on the aforementioned API, a new website is under development and will replace our current website based on DokuWiki.
Indeed, if the lack of database and the plain text files structure of DokuWiki seemed at first attractive, as ./play.it supported only a handful of games (link in French), this feature became more inconvenient as the library of ./play.it supported games grew.
We shall make an in-depth presentation of this website for the 2.13 release of ./play.it, but a public demo of the development version from our forge is already available.
If you feel like providing an helping hand on this task, some priority tasks have been identified to allow opening a new Web site able to replace the current one. And for those interested in technical details, this web Site was developed in PHP using the framework Laravel. The current in-development version is hosted for now on the same Debian Sid than the API.

GUI

A regular comment that is done about the project is that, if the purpose is to make installing games accessible to everyone without technical skills, having to run scripts in the terminal remains somewhat intimidating. Our answer until now has been that while the project itself doesn't aim to providing a graphical interface (KISS principle "Keep it simple, stupid"), still and always), but that it would be relatively easy to, later on, develop a graphical front-end to it.
Well, it happens that is now reality. Around the time of our latest publication, one of our contributors, using the API we just talked about, developed a small prototype that is usable enough to warrant a little shout out. :-)
In practice, it is some small Python 3 code (an HCI completely in POSIX shell is for a later date :-°), using GTK 3 (and still a VTE terminal to display the commands issued, but the user shouldn't have to input anything in it, except perhaps the root password to install some packages). This allowed to verify that, as we used to say, it would be relatively easy, since a script of less than 500 lines of code (written quickly over a week-end) was enough to do the job !
Of course, this graphical interface project stays independent from the main project, and is maintained in a specific repository. It seems interesting to us to promote it in order to ease the use of ./play.it, but this doesn't prevent any other similar projects to be born, for example using a different language or graphical toolkit (we, globally, don't have any particular affinity towards Python or GTK).
The use of this HCI needs three steps : first, a list of available games is displayed, coming directly from our API. You just need to select in the list (optionally using the search bar) the game you want to install. Then it switches to a second display, which list the required files. If several alternatives are available, the user can select the one he wants to use. All those files must be in the same directory, the address bar on the top enabling to select which one to use (click on the open button on the top opens a filesystem navigation window). Once all those files available (if they can be downloaded, the software will do it automatically), you can move ahead to the third step, which is just watching ./play.it do its job :-) Once done, a simple click on the button on the bottom will run the game (even if, from this step, the game is fully integrated on your system as usual, you no longer need this tool to run it).
To download potentially missing files, the HCI will use, depending on what's available on the system, either wget, curl or aria2c (this last one also handling torrents), of which the output will be displayed in the terminal of the third phase, just before running the scripts. For privilege escalation to install packages, sudo will be used preferentially if available (with the option to use a third-party application for password input, if the corresponding environment variable is set, which is more user-friendly), else su will be used.
Of course, any suggestion for an improvement will be received with pleasure.

New games

Of course, such an announcement would not be complete without a list of the games that got added to our collection since the 2.11 release… So here you go:
If your favourite game is not supported by ./play.it yet, you should ask for it in the dedicated tracker on our forge. The only requirement to be a valid request is that there exists a version of the game that is not burdened by DRM.

What’s next?

Our team being inexhaustible, work on the future 2.13 version has already begun…
A few major objectives of this next version are :
If your desired features aren't on this list, don't hesitate to signal it us, in the comments of this news release. ;)

2020.09.28 08:02 josephtrautner SEO Strategy Fundamentals for Beginners

So you've just acquired a spanking new domain name always try for the domain name that catches your Audience's attention. You research a lot of top keywords and keyword phrases and decide that you are going to position yourself as a brand. Your research shows that it is a hot topic and online searchers are searching for your product or service.
OK, so you position yourself as a brand online. Next, you produce a few hundred or thousand of quality content posts that you slick it up with beautiful graphics and/or layout that grabs their attention. You start blogging and PR'ing ( rewriting your own articles over and over )to draw in some attention.
You drop a few links on the site or distribute a couple of your own. Finally, you arm yourself with a couple of well-written articles that you post over at article directories and ezines with a link that clips right into your business site.
You wait... and wait... and wait.
Longterm SEO strategy
Now you find yourself being mentioned in the search engines...not too much but you are getting the tastes coming down your sleeve. It's time to boost your SEO strategy. Remember the dog that had the retrieve and stood tall beside you when are you retrieving? Well, when you have your website online you need to have "the first element reading" as your foundation.
What does "on-site optimization" mean?
Put simply, on-site optimization is what you do to your own website to make it pleasing to the search engines. The way search engines view your website is through their search spiders ( also known as crawlers or robots as people call them) that list and report back any interesting items they come across on your website. Now I am not talking about common sense keyword optimization or common web design issues, I am talking about some additional things that collectively result in a better overall search engine view of your website when being optimized for search.
You will find many "onsite" items on a well-designed website that enhance search engine visibility and ranking of your website when being optimized for search. Here are just a few to get you started:
  1. Research what your target keywords and phrases are. Remember it is better to have a website designed for your visitors than a website designed for the search engines, no matter how smart your visitors may seem to be. There are several programs to help you learn about the most popular keywords being used by visitors today, and you can be list in these programs and identify the keywords that will help your business and website recognition.
  2. Having the knowledge of the keywords and phrases being used by your visitors today, you will need to refresh and organize your website to get your website up to date and into the database of search engines. Search engines have what are called "spiders", or computer programs that crawl your website to see what is there. The spiders take a snapshot of your website at any given time. This includes the titles of your pages, any titles or headers on your pages, and anything else that is visible. It even includes the navigation menu on your website. This all has to be analyzed and set up properly, or it will not do you any good.
  3. Now that you have identified what your search engine optimization strategy is going to be, you will need to identify if you are going to use "White Hat" or "Black Hat" SEO. White Hat SEO is the practice of creating content for your visitors, which is friendly to search engines. By unfavorable practices, you could find your website blacklisted by search engines. Again, any unfavorable practices will result in your website being cut off from search engines.
Black Hat SEO is the opposite of White Hat. The spiders and bots are constantly looking for ways to beat the system, and some people choose to overdo it. The result is that your website could be banned from search engines entirely. If you decide to take this route, be sure you are taking the correct steps to drive traffic to your website.
  1. Depending on the scope of your website and the products or services you are providing, you may need to use the services provided by an SEO company. If your website is a small business, you will probably be able to handle all of your SEO needs on your own with the help of the professionals. However, if you are a large business with many departments that require a lot of publicity, time, and effort to keep up with the latest standards and to keep ahead of your competition, you may want to seriously consider hiring an SEO specialist.

2020.09.28 04:48 black7375 For a better home screen UX

For a better home screen UX
First of all, thank you to Team Fenix, who is making great home screens.
Fenix's New Home Screen Concept from Github(MozillaUX)
The following contents are written in Fenix::[UX] [Meta] Make the most useful content easily accessible on the homescreen's comment, but I think there are contents that can be applied to iOS or desktop browser.
In addition, I have other useful ideas such as tab management screen, scrolling experience, screenshots, etc. I will write them when I have time.

New Home Screen

It's really cool!!
  • Easy to operate with one hand
  • Home, Bookmark, and History access are available, as Fennec
  • Also easy to switch to Private Mode.
There are some things I would like to improve.Assume various web pages as one application.
And this is a Home tab part improvement suggestion.

Like a launcher

The first list is the same as Launcher's Home or Dock.
You should be able to keep the same items unless you modify them.Users remember their location.
Except for the basic items, it should not be added automatically like the app drawer. In fact, I'm not happy with Desktop Firefox either.
Samsung Internet's Quick access is a best practice.
Samsung Internet's Quick Access
  • Quick access's Home:
    • Large Icon: The icons are large and easy to identify.
    • New Item: Just press the button and enter the URL.
      • Plus: When adding items, be sure to refer to bookmarks and history as well.
  • Quick access - Pressed
    • Only Arrange: When only dragging is performed, the edit screen is not converted after the arrange operation.
    • Edit Screen
      • Like the launcher's home screen, it can be deleted and renamed.
      • Can select all of items.
      • Plus: Shouldn't display additional icons
You only need to display those that have already been pinned, so you don't need a pin icon and it can be neat.I'll call it Pinned below.

Highlights

It has expanded the above.
Now, you can ask:How can I display my top visit history?
The answer is simple.Create a space that lists the items you expect to visit frequently.
You can place the number of visits, the date of visit, etc. according to the ranking algorithm. You can also consider how to recommend domains.
F&A: What is the layout of Pinned, Collections, and Highlights?
Just follow Fennec's method.
Fennec's Home Screen
  • Order: Place Pinned, Collections, Highlights in order.
  • Replace: Put Collections instead of Pocket
  • Domains to Icon(1 Line): Information can be delivered by displaying only the favicon && domain name.
  • Pages to List(2 Line, expandable): It's hard to notice without information like title or link.

In Private Mode

It would be nice to have a useful dashboard while using private mode.
I think Fennec and Opera are good examples.
Fennec's Private Home Screen
  • No tabs: Show message
  • New tab: Display Home Screen

Thank you for reading this article.

2020.09.28 04:05 feministicon Got a job

2020.09.28 02:39 oofboi2002 First time posting. Please critique my long ass story as it is not near finished yet. Even if its a nuke of a criticism give it to me

My dismal rumination was abruptly quelled by a stout hand-clapping my shoulder, my thoughts still roared as I turned to see the briny barge captain who had stirred me.
I noticed a filmy patch of fog rolling through the cobbled stone streets as I left. “Hello, my name is Ida and welcome to my Inn.
However, many of the prospectors reported seeing pale slick-headed figures stalking the dark inlets of the cave system.
The mutant’s physical condition is questionable, to say the least. Much of its body was simply gaunt deformity. The torso is mostly stretched thin skin over protruding bones. The mutant’s prominent facial features include its lack of a nose, instead, it has two nostrils nestled in a small facial ridge where its nose should be was.
I took a closer look at the paper to notice that Ida was, in fact, right that many travelers had come to the inn, however, there was a column marked “Room Status” and every single name except for mine was marked vacated on the same date and within the same hour. This confused me at first, but I then realized that these people must have come together, perhaps they checked out to explore the island’s entirety. As I left the Inn I was again greeted with a thick fog and dark skies.
We best get back ‘afore the storm gets nasty.”
On the way back through town the officer did not march confidently as he had previously, he continuously turned his head to look at me until we reached the Inn as if he were looking at my expression to determine whether or not I had heard his preceding utterance. I strode to the desk to apologize for using outmoded currency, but instead of anger, the senior matriarch gave a warm smile and politely said “The locals may use those stupid scales, but I still use mainland currency because that barge not only brings patrons but supplies to keep my Inn in the sterling condition it’s in now. You don’t need to worry about those gross scales here young man.” Relief washed over me as I thanked her profusely as I lumbered up the stairs with my groceries.
When I finally locked my room door I was ready to sleep sometime in this dingy town away.
Suddenly the fire in the bowl changed into water but still moved as if it were scorching flame.

2020.09.28 01:33 dojo7 Technical TLDR on Notion's data model?

Hi folks --
I'm new to Notion, having played with any number of similar solutions out there (Evernote, AirTable, OneNote, etc, all the way back to Hypercard years ago :-) ). I'm trying to find a technically-oriented brief/summary on Notion's basic data model -- has anyone written up a TLDR on this? Here's what I've gleaned so far in a simple "top 10" format:
  1. Modern, minimalist layout with consumer-oriented editing feature set (not to be underestimated in value)
  2. A relational database where each record is a first-class wiki/notes page with arbitrary content on it as well as field values for that record.
  3. Every page is wiki-like but built from blocks that allow layout, reorganization, and simple structuring, plus the field values/page attributes.
  4. Strongly typed with a solid range of field types including display and widgets, e.g. calendar widget for date types, web pages previews for URL data types.
  5. Tables have views like matrix, Kansan, thumbnails, etc, all kept up-to-date with the underlying data.
  6. Database tables can have foreign key references allowing pages to linked in multiple ways with corresponding aggregation, filtering and roll-up functions.
  7. Encourages incremental refinement, e.g. can start with a simple list and then decide it should become a database. Don't have to design everything upfront.
  8. Simple initial implementations of 2-way/back-links and embedding/transclusion; sounds like more to come.
  9. The data model is relational, not object-oriented (no inheritance) or graph-like (e.g. relations don't have attributes themselves).
  10. Currently lacks public API and/or developer platform, but likely in progress.
Have I missed anything major, especially on the data modeling front?

2020.09.27 22:52 thecommonpigeon Spiderman fartfic

Peter's favourite deli had just started stocking some new hot food and he'd skipped breakfast so he felt obliged to go and try out what they got before he got to school. Looking at the chalkboard above the counter the idea of a triple bean burrito sounded good to him even if he knew it would probably make his problem worse for the day but it was a risk he was willing to take.
Just as he was being passed the chunky burrito over the counter his senses picked up on something outside the window. About a block away he could see a dude about his age getting cornered in an alleyway by some dudes much taller than him all looming over him in dark hoodies. He couldn't see the victim well but he could tell he was in trouble.
Grabbing the burrito he ran out the shop into the alley out back taking a bite of his burrito. He held his suit in one hand and his burrito in the other weighing up his options. He didn't want to waste time so he ended up picking both awkwardly slipping his suit on while scarfing down his burrito. As always it took a little extra pull getting it over his bulbous ass and eventually he was only left with the last part of the burrito and was fully suited.
As he began swinging over to where he saw the potential attack he hoped he wasn't too late, he could also feel his stomach instantly being attacked by the burrito and the swinging certainly wasn't helping.
Looking down at the alley from the roof of a nearby building he could tell that the guy getting cornered was definitely cute and definitely in danger.
Not wasting any time Peter swung down and began web shooting and incapacitating the thugs until only one was left. Going for his grand finale Peter catapulted himself at the thug and straddled him down to the ground ready to web him to the floor. But as he held the man down his stomach gave a familiar pang triggering a new idea for Peter.
PPFFFRRRRP
The potent blast exited Peter's tightly clad ass and the meaty stink invaded the thugs nose making the already weakened man pass out. Peter had forgotten all about the guy who was looking grateful but also had a hand over his nose. Peter instead of being embarrassed was happy to be in a disguise, it was just a shame that he couldn't ask for his number as Spiderman.
"Keeps Spiderman's stink between us." He quipped waving his hand behind his ass towards the cute guy. While Peter was having fun with it he couldn't ignore just how much he enjoyed it.
Not looking at the guy too much in fear of doing something stupid he quickly left to swing closer to school leaving the shaken boy in the lingering cloud of his gas.
Waiting for his first class to begin Peter couldn't help but daydream about the cute guy he'd saved but he knew nothing could come from it. That was until the teacher walked in with the same boy following him.
The cute guy finally introduced himself as Hugo and sat next to Peter with a deep sigh obviously in an attempt to relieve some of the tension from his stressful morning.
The now blushing Peter didn't know how to react to the situation but he came to the conclusion that fate was giving him a second chance. Turning to the boy he gave him an awkward smile which was returned with a surprised grin back. To that Peter decided to introduce himself.
"Hey I'm Peter, if you need any help getting around the school feel free to ask." He finished stumbling awkwardly through the sentence which was replied to with a cool "I'll keep that in mind."
The lesson began promptly bit of course Peter couldn't concentrate feeling like he couldn't stop staring at the attractive guy next to him who occasionally made eye contact making Peter's face redden even more. Peter recognised the irony of the situation with Hugo being the new student but seemingly so much more comfortable than Peter whose stomach felt like butterflies.
These butterflies got worse until Peter finally registered that it was actually burrito gas making its vengeful return from earlier. He knew the teacher wouldn't let him leave for the toilet so close to the end of the lesson and it certainly wouldn't be able to stay in. Writhing in his seat all Peter could do was lean to his side and spread his ass and try and slip it out silently.
In his stressful state Peter hadn't realised that his ass was pointing directly at Hugo but he had already committed to the position and his ass was already loosening.
fsssssshhhh
Peter had escaped the public humiliation of it being fully audible but the heat of it escaping fortold the horrific stink which was confirmed with a quick sniff and consequent silent wretch. However what Peter quickly noticed is that Hugo was looking straight at the seat of Peter's chair, he had heard the rush of air.
On top of being mortified that he had been noticed he made a new kind of eye contact with the man. It was accusatory and shocked.
He recognised the stink.
Peter quickly jolted his head down his heart racing, it was a stretch but this guy could totally out him. He peered back at Hugo who like many others on the class now had a hand covering their nose but he was still looking at Peter only there was a mischievous look in his eye.
The lesson was quickly over and the rest of the class was quick to leave as Peter's powerful stench was pretty rough to stay in. Quickly clambering out of his seat Peter almost ran down the hallway letting out little bursts of potent gas. What he didn't notice in his worried state was that he was being followed.
Peter burst into the toilets in his school ran into a cubicle before anyone in there could see him. He locked the door behind him and leaned against the door sticking his ass out and let loose.
FRAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPPPPTTT
The noxious blast echoed throughout the room and was quickly followed by response from other stragglers in the room some applause some laughing and after time for the smell to spread a lot of gagging and complaints. Peter didn't care though he was just panting in relief of finally farting.
While he was still in recovery in the now potentially biohazardous bathroom he heard steps get closer to his cubicle. Panting on the toilet seat Peter saw a note get flicked under the door at him.
"Hey Stinkerman, not to be rude but was able to find you because of the trail of gas you tend to leave in your wake. I think we need to chat, meet you in the café by the school in half an hour ;)"
Despite the lack of name Peter knew it was Hugo. He was happy that Hugo wanted to chat privately but immediately the student got nervous that a guy he had a building crush on wanted to confront him about his biggest secret and his terrible gas.
Peter being so nervous was making him particularly gassy, he was starting to feel a bit guilty at the state he was going to leave this windowless men's room in.
After giving himself a good amount of time to rip some nervous meaty farts in the toilet Peter snuck out the toxic room and made his way to café, on his way attempting to clean up his hair or try in vain to cover the stink of flatulence stuck into his clothes with some deodorant.
When Peter arrived at the café he noticed Hugo sitting in a secluded booth. Before Peter could sit reluctantly sit down he was greeted with:
"Hey Stinkerman." Hugo gave Peter with a smirk.
"Dude not too loud." Peter attempted to hush him.
"What no one else knows about gassy spiderman." Hugo retorted giving Peter a confident slightly flirtatious look.
"So you worked it out huh, sorry you had to experience all that... ya know.... stink.." Peter was surprised that Hugo was willing to talk to him after smelling so much of his gas.
"It's fine... it's really fine actually." Hugo gave Peter a subtle smile. "And I'm gonna keep your secret on one condition."
Peter was calmed by the smile but worried by the condition giving Hugo a questioning look.
"You take me out on a date, the new guy at school could use a guy like you to help him stay, maybe your certain scent could be of some use?"
Peter blushed happy to hear that his crush was reciprocated and that Hugo even managed to find a way to see his flatulence as a positive.
Taking a deep breathe Peter could finally respond "Sounds good to me." His stomach rumbling before he could carry on his sentence spurred on a new plan though, "But first you'll need to pass my compatibility test."
To this Hugo raised an eyebrow.
Peter urged Hugo to follow him out the back entrance of the café into the alley where he quickly pulled on his mask from his bag and used his webs to pull him and Hugo up the building to the roof. Hugo didn't hesitate to cling onto Peter as he was lifted up. While Peter would have usually found this sweet the body clinging against his was mainly just pushing his gas closer to the breaking point.
When they were on the roof he quickly got Hugo to sit down.
"So before we go any further you're gonna have to deal with the full force of my farts think you can handle it?"
After dominating the thugs, his class and his school toilets in the same day Peter's urge to dominate with his gas was becoming uncontrollable and Hugo's semi-willing face seemed like the next best target.
Hugo was now the one blushing as he looked up at the gassy guy above him "Uh sure I guess if you have to..." He wasn't sure if he should let Peter see his growing erection tenting in his trousers but if this went where it seemed like it was it would be pretty hard to miss.
"Well then buckle up" Peter said standing over him before lowering his trousers and boxers enough for his bouncy round ass to be bared right in Hugo's face who was almost salivating at this point. But before he could fully appreciate the view it he was shoved in my Peters hand coming behind his head.
The sweaty musk of the tight crack was overpowering but the sound of rumbling was what really worried Hugo.
PRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAARPPPPPPPPPPP
The wind engulfed the new guy's whole being as Peter sighed orgasmically at the sensation of letting out such a massive volume of gas. Even the meaty stink Peter got from where he was could probably kill, he was slightly worried that the guy recieving it could face permanent damage.
"Fuck you stink!" Could be made out muffled under the cushioning of Peter's ass and the roaring gas escaping his butt.
Peter couldn't tell if that was a good or a bad thing but either way it wouldn't stop him.
"I got a lot of powers when I became Spiderman but don't worry man this gassy gift is all natural..."
Cocking his leg Peter let loose even more.
FRRRRRRAAAAARRRRRRP
PPPRRRRRRTTTTTT
BBBBBRRRRRRRRRRAAAPPPPPPPP
The smell on top of the building was becoming horrendous the pollution in this certain block of New York was certainly getting worse today. The roof of the building slowly enveloped in a thick cloud of farts leaving the inhumanly stinking student.
FRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAP
Ending with a particularly rotten gas blast Peter finished his barrage and turned around to find the man he liked passed out with his eyes rolled back and nose pushed up and sweaty but with a slight smile. What was also noticeable was the boner very present in his trousers confirming Peter's suspicions.
Leaving the the stink covered rooftop he carried Hugo down to the café back entrance and discreetly placing him back into their booth. Before leaving him with his number on a note Peter made sure to put it under his ass and leave a particularly foul SBD on it marking it with his stench to remind Hugo of the reason to call him.

2020.09.27 20:45 yaycupcake Happy 2 Year Anniversary Dragalia Lost!

Happy 2 Year Anniversary Dragalia Lost!

We hope you all are enjoying the anniversary festivities and are continuing to celebrate the anniversary! In the spirit of in game changes, we would also like to take some time this anniversary to talk about some subreddit level changes.
Rule 4 Update:
We've heard your feedback that Rule 4 can often feel confusing or unclear, as well as that Low Effort being the primary focus may not be the best way to achieve the spirit of making sure posts here are the best they can be. To help remedy that, we have rewritten Rule 4 from the ground up, broken it into new sections, and hopefully made it easier to understand. Our new description found in the sidebar will be " We ask that all posts contribute to discussion, be topical, and be original" however for the full rule text please see our subreddit wiki here. Please share any feedback on our updated Rule 4 with us in this thread!
Ongoing Banner Submissions and CSS Support:
A few of you may have noticed that CSS updates on Old Reddit have slowed down a bit. While it may feel surprising to long time redditors, the number of users using Old Reddit (the only platform which can see CSS) is low and continues to dwindle. For many users, New Reddit is Reddit, and for a far greater number mobile apps are their primary way to consume DragaliaLost. In fact, more users view this sub via mobile apps than old reddit, new reddit, and mobile web combined! Because of this we are slowly reducing the amount of time we spend on the CSS features very few users ever experience. Rest assured that Flair updates will continue, though we are doing so in batches rather than after every banner release, and will continue to do other updates here and there. In the meantime if you feel CSS changes aren't coming out as often as you would like, we hope this helps explain why we are focusing our efforts on things that work across all Reddit platforms. We are always open to community submissions for banners.
Mod Apps:
The time has come for the DragaliaLost mod team to grow! If you are interested in helping the sub and joining the team, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/kZNmpAuqhc4qSo7A8
Applications will remain open for 2 weeks from the date of this post. An announcement introducing new mods will be made and stickied at the top of the sub after applications have closed and new mod have been selected.
We hope you all enjoy the anniversary, and please feel free to share any comments or feedback with us in this thread! Nothing mentioned regarding Rule #4 is final.

2020.09.27 19:08 biggreekgeek Flatten the Curve. Part 53. IoT Surveillance. Recorded Future can Predict our Future. Petraeus. The Pandemic Era and Environmental Collapse. Oh. Do you Remember All the Dead Elephant's? I Do. And It Gave More Evidence of the Environmental Collapse Cover-up. It's Worse Than They Tell Us.

I'm back. And it's time to get back to work. I know that a lot of you have been refreshing and looking out for my posts, and I'm sorry. Life just got way too busy and left me too tired to write. And even though you probably thought that I'd gone missing, I bet you the Surveillance State didn't. Nope. The all seeing eye knew exactly where I was. And not only me, it knows where you are. It knows where all of us are. And it probably knows us better than we know ourselves.
2010, August 28 • Google, CIA Invest in 'Future' of Web Monitoring. The investment arms of the CIA and Google are both backing a company that monitors the web in real time – and says it uses that information to predict the future. The company is called Recorded Future, and it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents – both present and still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk about the same, or related, entities and events." The idea is to figure out for each incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event. "The cool thing is, you can actually predict the curve, in many cases," says company CEO Christopher Ahlberg, a former Swedish Army Ranger with a PhD in computer science. Source Here
That's so amazing isn’t it? You can actually predict the curve. Well now, let's think, were have we seen that curve terminology before? Population Curve? Nope, that's not right. Curve Your Enthusiasm? That doesn't sound right either. Right, it's Curb Your Enthusiasm. Duh. The Learning Curve? Ugh. I just can't remember, can you? Oh shoot, that's right, it's the Title of My Post's, Flatten the Curve. Ok. Moving on. Let's get back to Recorded Future.
Occupy Wall Street Media Monitoring • In 2011, Recorded Future reported, "... gaining online momentum for the Occupy Wall Street movement. When we look more carefully at influencers in this discussion using our Influencer Map, we find that Iran Press TV is the second largest influencer after the U.S. media!" Source Here
Recorded Future saw online momentum for the Occupy Wall Street Movement. But. But. Does that mean they knew the social discord was going to lead to today's riots? Could they be manipulating police to follow orders without fear of repercussions for the future? Nah. They couldn't have, otherwise police officers wouldn't be going to go jail after violating a citizens rights, right?
2020, June 22 • Police in America’s biggest cities are failing to meet even the most basic international human rights standards governing the use of lethal force, a new study from the University of Chicago has found. Researchers in the university’s law school put the lethal use-of-force policies of police in the 20 largest US cities under the microscope. They found not a single police department was operating under guidelines that are compliant with the minimum standards laid out under international human rights laws. Among the failings identified by the law scholars, some police forces violate the requirement that lethal force should only be wielded when facing an immediate threat and as a last resort. Some departments allow deadly responses in cases of “escaping suspects”, “fugitives”, or “prevention of crime” – all scenarios that would be deemed to fall well outside the boundaries set by international law. Top UN human rights expert urges US to listen to demands of protesters. In other cities, police guidelines failed to constrain officers to use only as much force as is proportionate to the threat confronting them. Source Here
Hmmm. Maybe the militarization of our police is starting to make a lot more sense now, doesn’t it? It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy to know that pretty soon that same police force will be able to track you anywhere.

Crap your pants. Solution. If you think the Surveillance State is omnipresent now, just wait until the infrastructure is built for the next level of control. For our safety, of course. Keep Calm and Carry On. The Not Normal New Normal is going to be very dangerous. And to save us from the Not Normal New Normal they have to keep us safe from Fake News with Fact Checks. Wash Your Hands and Wear Your Mask. Keep your Contact Tracer App Up to Date. Don't gather in large groups, use the internet to keep in touch with friends and loved ones, that way we can data mine those conversations to keep you safe from conspiracy theorists antivax who propagate propoganda.
September 2, 2020 • Although the coronavirus pandemic has altered how people live for some time now, the knowledge that it will have an end is a faint light at the end of a long socially distanced tunnel. But, according to new research, that light may be further than we thought. Infectious disease expert and coronavirus task force voice of reason Anthony Fauci believes we may be entering a “pandemic era.” Because of course we are. Source Here
The Pandemic Era. Line up and get shot, errr, sorry, I meant, line up and get your shots. Don't be an antivaxer. Save Civilization, Get Your Vaccination. Remember, we won't have a second wave, it will just be one long continuous wave. Wait. Hold up. Nope. That's wrong. We are having a second wave. Surf's up so don't wipe out.
His assertion comes from a new report in the scientific journal Cell, whose author David Morens, a medical historian and colleague of Fauci’s at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, predicts that coronavirus might be only the first of a series of worldwide diseases. These types of diseases have been cropping up more and more frequently, according to research. The phenomenon is similar to the exponential growth of climate change, meaning if a “pandemic age,” becomes a reality, it joins humanity’s very real race to doomsday. Neat!
Ah. The Pandemic Era and Environmental Collapse. Amazing! It's the sequel that we've been waiting for! Mad Max and Pandemic Road. And who is causing the upcoming doom? Why us, who else. You see, the enemy isn't at the gates, that Trojan Horse was yesterday's news. The Terrorists that were threatening Western Civilization have been beaten back, only to be replaced by an enemy that can't be seen or heard. The Biological Terrorists. And how are we responsible for the Great Bioterror that needs a Great Reset?
As for the culprit to this acceleration? It’s us, of course. For how humans are causing this acceleration, Fauci and Morens point to deforestation, urban crowding, and wet markets for wild game, which have been wreaking havoc for a century and contribute to environmental degradation around the world.
Us. It's always us. We don't listen. We just Keep Calm and Carry On. But now we're going to have to listen. We won't have any choice, will we? The environment is collapsing. It's our fault. We own the companies. We package small items in big boxes because, marketing. We dump toxic chemical waste that poison people. We make cellphones that are outdated in one year. We're the one's lying about plastic being recycled. What? You actually thought you were doing your part and saving the environment?
2020, September, 21 • The industry's awareness that recycling wouldn't keep plastic out of landfills and the environment dates to the program's earliest days, [NPR] found. "There is serious doubt that [recycling plastic] can ever be made viable on an economic basis," one industry insider wrote in a 1974 speech. Yet the industry spent millions telling people to recycle, because, as one former top industry insider told NPR, selling recycling sold plastic, even if it wasn't true. Here's the basic problem: All used plastic can be turned into new things, but picking it up, sorting it out and melting it down is expensive. Plastic also degrades each time it is reused, meaning it can't be reused more than once or twice. On the other hand, new plastic is cheap. It's made from oil and gas, and it's almost always less expensive and of better quality to just start fresh. As it turns out, less than 10% of plastic has ever been recycled.

Ever.

Source Here
It's us.. We demand these things. What? Does that shock you? Of course that's why they make our goods disposable, the public demands it. It's not like marketing works and the demand is a manufactured need to increase their profits. Nope. It's us. Our existence is killing the planet. This wouldn't be happening if there weren't so many of us. Because this is obviously the first extinction level event that could be happening because of abrupt climate change.
2020, September, 25 • A New Mass Extinction Event Has Been Discovered, And It Triggered The Rise of Dinosaurs. Source Here
Oh. Six mass extinction events. But it's us isn't it? Just look around. Birds falling from the sky. Fish washing up on shore. Elephant's dying.

WAIT! HOLD UP!

Didn't I write about the Elephant's dying? Yep. Flatten the Curve. Part 30 And didn't I say that it was cyanobacteria because I saw a pond that looked like it was outgassing hydrogen sulfide gas in a video I linked to? Yes, yes I did. And guess what? The Greek was right.
More than 300 elephants in Botswana have been killed by toxin-producing cyanobacteria in waterholes, government wildlife officials said Monday. But that explanation doesn't satisfy some conservationists. The deaths, which took place over the course of three months, were first recorded in May and reported in early July. Their cause was initially a mystery; Botswana ordered laboratory tests to be carried out on carcass, soil and water samples as speculation grew over the deaths. Cyanobacteria are routinely found in water, but not all produce toxins. Scientists worry that climate change will trigger the bacteria to produce more toxins as water temperatures rise and conditions become more favorable for the bacteria to grow. Source Here
That doesn't satisfy some conservationists? Really? Worldwide reports of a rotten egg smell. Dogs dying when they jump into cyanobacteria filled waters. Rivers turning red. Nah. The New Normal is our New Normal, until AI turns it into our New New Normal.
Pax Technica • What is the internet of things? This pax will not be dominated by any one state, Howard argues, but by “a special kind of stability in global politics, revealing a pact between big technology firms and government”. The categories of democracy and dictatorship will fall. In their place, he claims, will be data-driven socio-technocracies, built on the intensive reporting of our behaviours, habits, tastes and beliefs, seamlessly transmitted by the devices we use, carry and interact with. We won’t need to express our political preferences and needs: our white goods and driverless cars will express them for us. Source Here By tracking us in intensive and intrusive ways – not only in our homes, but in our vehicles and bodies – data-driven devices can nudge, manipulate and mould our behaviours, habits and preferences, limit our autonomy, and bring quantification, segregation and discrimination to what is currently a political economy held together by social fuzziness.
They'll be able to shape and modify our behavior. And when you put Recorded Future and other companies into the mix, guess what happens? They'll shape and modify our behaviours before they become our behaviours, because they'll already know how we'll behave in the future. Kind of like the shaming of antivaxer behavior before they announce:
Annual COVID-19 Vaccine May Be Necessary. Source Here
Or priming us for AI to save the environment:
According to a recent survey by Intel and the research firm Concentrix, 74 percent of business-decision makers working in environmental sustainability agree artificial intelligence (AI) will help solve long-standing environmental challenges; 64 percent agree the Internet of Things (IoT) will help solve these challenges. As the field of AI develops, so will the potential to protect the environment. From the land and air to both drinking and ocean water, AI is shaping up to be the key that governments, organizations, and individuals can tap to work toward a cleaner planet. Source Here
Do you see where all this is going? The AI and IoT will be everywhere. It will save us from the Collapse, which really means, it will save us from ourselves. Do you see the convergence that's taking place? No? Let me remind you. Because if we are the problem, then we aren't alone.
Coronavirus which is killing and infecting people all over the world was created in a Lab in China's Wuhan, such an idea would have been labelled a conspiracy theory until a few weeks ago. But earlier this week, a Chinese virologist Dr Li-Meng Yan, in an exclusive conversation with WION claimed that the deadly coronavirus was developed in a government laboratory in Wuhan. She also said that Chinese government was aware of the COVID-19 spread. And now Professor Giuseppe Tritto, an internationally known expert in biotechnology and nanotechnology in his book 'China COVID 19: The chimera that changed the world' has said that he believes the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is behind the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), leaving little doubt that this viral “chimera” was artificially created as a bioweapon. Source Here
Researchers claim long-term exposure to air pollution in China killed 30.8 million people between 2000 and 2016. Source Here
We're going to war against China, while they get the security apparatus up for AI in the war against our minds and individuality. For an environmental collapse they blame us for. And they will focus our shame into anger towards China.
The system will be set up. We will go to war with China. And the system will be fully executed by the time the war is done. It will have to be, for our safety, of course. And AI will keep us safe. Right? RIGHT! Wait. So then why are all the elite building Doomsday Bunkers? Almost like the 1% are covering their bases in case AI can't save us.
One of the most insidious things about gaslighting is the denial of reality. Being denied what you have seen. Being denied what you have experienced and know to be true. It can make you feel like you are crazy. But you are not crazy. Dr Robin Stern, associate director at Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and author of The Gaslight Effect says that usually “when people are abused there are signs that you can point to that are much more obvious. Someone who has been hit or threatened for instance – it’s easy to see and understand how they have been hurt. But when someone is manipulating you, you end up second-guessing yourself and turning your attention to yourself as the person to blame”. Source Here
DARVO - Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. Or, Gaslighting. It's a popular term. It's a great way to make us feel like powerless victims. Gaslighting makes us feel like we need to be saved. When you're searching for answers but only end up finding confusion, it's setting you up to accept any New Normal answer they'll eventually give you. Need someone to blame for the state of chaos? Here's China. They're the problem. We're All In This Together, and You're Either With Us Or Against Us. And there will be people against the war, and therefore against us, so we'll need surveillance to protect us from the enemies within. Because another War will be a necessary evil. World War Three will be the War to save the planet by destroying the planet. Makes sense, doesn't it? And when our planet is worse off than before? Then we'll need the surveillance to help us decide when to have Climate and Pandemic lockdowns. The omnipresent Eye of AI will guide us and safeguard us against Fake News and Not Normal New Normal Narrative disrupting lies. We will have to kill what's left of our privacy because dangerous thoughts are born in secrecy.
We must become a transparent society, because the truth doesn't need to hide. The truth is universal. But who decides what is true? Not us. We can't be trusted. Look what we already did with our privacy, we destroyed our planet. So we have to become dependent upon the system and trust the choices that the system makes. We can't just follow system orders though, we have to become a part of the system, a unified whole working towards the common good of all mankind. But what happens when you question the choices? What happens if your thoughts and actions disrupt the Not Normal New Normal Narrative?
Let's check back with David Petraeus a year later after openly musing about how the IoT will make surveillance ubiquitous in our society.
2012, November 9 • Petraeus Resigns From CIA After Feds Uncover 'Extramarital Affair' Source Here David Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, has resigned. Petraeus told CIA employees Friday in a letter that he was stepping down "for personal reasons... After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
2012, November 11 • How I Was Drawn Into the Cult of David Petraeus. The biggest irony surrounding CIA director David Petraeus’ downfall is becoming a casualty of the very publicity machine he cultivated to portray him as superhuman. I have some insight into how that machine worked. Source Here
2020, November 15 • Now the CIA Is Investigating Petraeus. Anyone who thought the scandal around CIA Director David Petraeus was winding down can think again. Now the CIA is investigating its former leader while some agency veterans whisper that they never liked him anyways. Source Here
Oops. I think David said something that he shouldn't have said about IoT and Surveillance. It's a quick fall from Superhero To Villan when you reveal the Superhero Clubhouse Secrets.
Look. Listen. Think. Question. All the time. The information is out there. So's the truth, even if it's camouflaged. Because the truth is, the big picture is a lot more complicated than thought reducing and behavioral shaping memes. Life isn't black and white. That's why they call it a Grey War. And the Grey War is happening all around us. And in the coming weeks I'll be posting some eye opening stories about the Dark Web, Blockchain, and the current narrative about inequality. About a certain pharmaceutical company and how it's DNA tests are failing the grade. We will dive into the Uighur Minority in China. And most importantly, Cicada 3301, and how it seems to be playing a larger role than most of us realize. And some updates on the current microbial imbalance that is starting to cause havoc on our planets environment. And as if that isn't enough for eye opening revelations, there is a disturbing trend that I've noticed regarding asteroids and impacts. Because why not, after all, 2020 isn't a real party until a Rockstar crashes the party.
I may have been too tired to post lately, but I wasn't too tired to read. Thanks again for all the comments and PM's checking in on me. It meant the world to me, even if I didn't have time to respond.
Heads up and eyes open. Talk soon.

GENERAL ELECTION INFORMATION
Absentee ballots are being sent out . This is a rolling process, and it may take some time for your ballot to get to you, so be patient if you have not received your ballot yet.
If you have not registered to vote yet, you should do so right now, using the link below:
https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voter-registration/register-to-vote-or-update-your-information/
The voter registration deadline is Monday, October 5.
If you are planning on voting in-person, skip to the VOTING IN-PERSON section below.
VOTING-BY-MAIL
If you want to request an absentee ballot, you can do so online through your Supervisor of Elections website (SEE TOP OF THE PAGE).
If you have already received your ballot by mail, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE FILLING IT OUT, then, once you have read the instructions, fill out your ballot, and then MAKE SURE TO SIGN YOUR NAME IN THE CORRECT PLACE.
Once you have completed your ballot, drop-it off at a drop-box at your Supervisor of Elections Office.
You can also drop off your ballot at a temporary drop-box at any during the Early Voting Period. In some cases, the temporary drop-box will be exterior, and in some cases, the drop-box will be interior.
SEE THE TOP OF THE PAGE FOR A LINK TO DROP-BOXES AND EARLY VOTING LOCATIONS.
If you cannot return your ballot yourself, you can have somebody else return it for you. AS A GENERAL RULE, DO NOT GIVE YOUR BALLOT TO ANYBODY THAT YOU DO NOT FULLY TRUST.
All ballots need to be returned by 7:00pm on Election Day, so try to get it in as soon as possible.
In the case of a signature mismatch or a missing signature, there is a cure process for mismatched signatures.
https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voting/vote-by-mail/ [How to Correct a Missing or Mismatched Signature on Your Vote-by-Mail Ballot]
To be more specific, according to the Florida Division of Elections website:
https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voting/vote-by-mail/ [How to Correct a Missing or Mismatched Signature on Your Vote-by-Mail Ballot]
A Supervisor of Elections is required to notify a voter as soon as it is practical if a voter's signature is missing or does not match the one on record.
Once a voter learns about the missing or mismatched signature, the voter may complete and return a “Vote-by-Mail Ballot Cure” Affidavit (Form DS-DE 13). Forms can be found below:
In English
En Español
A copy of valid identification must be returned along with this form. The documentation can be returned by mail, email, fax ,or in person.
THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT THE FORM AND THE COPY OF THE ID THE AFFIDAVIT IS 5:00pm TWO DAYS AFTER THE ELECTION (5:00pm on Thursday, November 5).
As a side-note, Florida processes their ballots early, which not only means that there is a higher likelihood (not necessarily a certainty, but a higher likelihood) of results being known on Election Night, but it also means that you essentially have a comfortable amount of time to cure any issues with your ballot.

VOTING IN-PERSON
If you are voting in-person, early voting is available between Monday, October 19 and Sunday, November 1 in Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties, and between Monday, October 19 and Saturday, October 31 in Seminole County. SEE LINK AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.
If you have already requested an absentee ballot but want to vote in-person, this is allowed.
Per the State of Florida Supervisors of Elections Website:
"If you decide to go to the polls to vote instead of voting by mail, you should bring the vote-by-mail ballot (marked or not) with you so that it can be cancelled at the polls.
If you come to the polls without the vote-by-mail ballot, you can vote a regular ballot if the Supervisor of Elections' office can confirm that it has not received the vote-by-mail ballot.
If it is confirmed that the Supervisor of Elections office has received the vote-by-mail ballot or it cannot be determined, you cannot vote a regular ballot at the polls. However, if you believe that you have not already voted, you will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot."
https://www.myfloridaelections.com/Voting-Elections/Ways-to-Vote/Vote-by-Mail-Absentee-Ballots [can vote in-person even if you have requested a ballot]

2020.09.26 17:29 Finiouss Q&A for V7

I just wanted to get something started here for us all to communicate about the update. There seems to be a lot of changes and very little info on what and how.
Edit: found the info and pasted below.
v7.0 - 25th September 020 (Update via the Play Store)
Crafting is now available! You can access crafting via the main menu button on the android app or "Character" drop-down on the web app.
The item that you can craft depends on your crafting level. The higher your crafting level, the better the items will be.
Crafting opens the doors to future possibilities such as item upgrades, and much more!.
Only a limited amount of items can be crafted at the moment. New items will gradually be added.
The app now has a bottom toolbar with the following options; home, messages, travel, notifications, and profile.
The profile now has a pop up that displays the characters stats and status. This can be accessed by the bottom toolbar.
The character area on the left menu has been removed (Android only).
Travel, world bosses, travel arena, profile, character and community have been removed from the main menu.
The battle arena has been changed to "battle" and it will act as a hub for both NPCs and PVP.
The chat now can be swiped from the right and will span across the entire height of the device in the same way that the menu does.
A link to the games official social media has been added to the android menu.
A direct link to the discussion boards has been to the menu.

Every event that the game holds will be within this events area and will contain a description, start date, and end date. The next event being Halloween.
You can now acquire skills! woodcutting, mining, fishing, and treasure hunting.
Each skill has its own experience points and level.
You must reach a certain level to be able to gather the materials for said skill. For example, to mine a "Red Pine Tree", you must have at least a level 50 woodcutting skill.
You also must have the correct type of equipment in order to gather the material. The equipment rarity must equal, or be higher than the material that you are going to gather. For example, the "Red Pine Tree" is epic. That means that you need atleast an Epic wood axe.
Starting items can be purchased from Toms Tools shop located in various towns.
Materials are gathered from travelling. Different locations have different drop rates for each material. Some may have more trees than others likewise with fishing ponds, and hidden treasures.
Each material that you stumble across will have a random amount of materials associated to it. You may come across a tree that will give out 4 pieces of wood before it is exhausted whereas another might give out 7.
In order to gather the material, you need to hold the button for about 3-4 seconds.
There are sound effects when you are gathering the materials.
Showcased avatars in the profile now appear on the top of the profile page (Android).
Gradients now don't show on solid profile backgrounds
There is now a chat cooldown. A player cannot post within 5 seconds of each other.

2020.09.26 06:05 CryptoOGkauai Meet the YFI Developer Community

At about 150 members strong so far, the YFI project has attracted some of the top minds in crypto that have been invited to be part of the YFI Developer Community. This invitation to be part of this premier developer community is high praise IMO.
We help the 5 main YFI Developers mentioned in the AMA yesterday, so that they can focus on development and testing, instead of doing the kinds of things YFI community managers like myself do, or one of the myriad other tasks the other ~140 community members do, to grow and improve the YFI ecosystem. This way: everyone's skills are utilized best so that we all can benefit.
There are giants of crypto and DeFi in this YFI Developer Community quietly going about their business with little fanfare. There's people of all walks of life all over the world that have found themselves intrigued enough with the project to offer their time and skills. I think all of the members of this community wear at least 2-3 "hats" (multi-role members).
Here is a partial list of the types of international developers and community members who are actively involved in the growth and expansion of the YFI ecosystem and DAO. I won't name names, as most are anonymous and you can get names of the first ~20 Devs listed further down in past subreddit posts, but you've seen some of them stop by from time to time. Your mods here are perfect examples of a typical, multi-role Dev Community member.
It takes a village to raise a child. This is your global village raising this project from nothing but code and an idea:

Hopefully I covered all of the main bases. If you're part of the YFI Dev Community, please say "Hi" and give a short description of your role(s), if you can.
To give you an idea of the current size of the sub-teams, YFI's Documents team of technical writers such as myself, editors, and marketers group currently number 19 members.
Our new YFI Communications Channel team of organizers, managers, volunteers and marketers meant to facilitate comms and consistent messaging is currently at 18 members.
It's an honor to work with all of them.
The amount of casual cross-collaboration with other giants of DeFi and crypto is simply unmatched, from what I've seen so far. The diagram I posted yesterday from the ZETA Protocol launch was a perfect example.
I've worked in a number of crypto community start-ups dating back to 2013, and this is the biggest, most massive crypto project I've been involved with so far, reminding me of the early days of BTC when we thought we'd be buying coffee with Bitcoin by now, and there was only one Bitcoin.

2020.09.26 02:58 Thedesiman Sissy dominated

This story is copied from internet many years ago. Although it's a work of fiction but it's a good one. So I am sharing this will all of you.
I am a sissy faggot I live in st Louis mo im in the closet no one knows i dress in femine clothes I was married when I was 20 and straight after a year I caught her cheating on me , we only had sexy 3 times I couldn't get hard with her , I was allways thinking of men, masters, tops, at home I stole her panties bras high heels lip stick, and would dress around the house, after the divorse I got the house and I started to wear panties to work everyday and shave my legs smooth , somedays i wear stockings under my work clothes and butt plugs ,my toe nails are bright pink allways ,, i hope no one catches me then on weekends I would dress up all weekend long , I then shaved my armpits and cock and balls ,, I was now smooth from the eyeballs down ,,
im very scared at being blackmailed and exposed and ruined but i have many fantasys like this one.
i wish i was caught and exposed as a sissy faggot cumdump by a dom black or white master or mistress online but i get embarrassed about thinking about being forced to be with a gay master . I meet him online in a sissy chat room we chat for a week or so and one night he says he has a new softwere program that is faster in chat and he asked me to install it . he uses the softwear program teamviewer to get into my computer and findout all my secrets , once i installed it he got on line with me and he made me watch as he added him self as the adminstraighter and he told me the computer was going to go to black screen for about 20 mins and for me to take a shower and shave really close and get dressed femine , in the mean time he added programs like keylogger , spy softwear, parental control softwear, mint. com , and webcam softwear, all to find out my info and blackmail and ruin me
he found out my passwords and email contacts and where i worked the first night , the next day he found out my home address and credit card numbers my home phone number and cell phone number , he slowly started to expose me and ruin me . hes goin to make me into his white sissy slave , i cant do anything he controls me now , he embarrasses me and humilates me my online master then told me that he was a dominate gay master and he was a cop in city that he lived in and that he can do anything he wants to me , because whos going to believe a sissy over a cop ,, he says he owns me now and that fun going to begin,, my black master found out i had being lieing about being single and that i had a girlfriend of two years and he made me get dressed like a slutty school girl and hold up my drivers licence to my face and say my real name and then say my sissy name and then say im a lieing sissy faggot and that I going to break up with my girlfriend so can serve my online black master forever and then I had to call her and break up with her over the phone on speaker phone so he would be able to hear everything she said while he watched me on webcam . I had no idea I was being recorded doing this , after that he made me dress femine everyday after work , made me wear girls shorts and tops in public, then made me buy a tiny thong bikini online that he picked out and then go to a tanning bed everyday in it and show him the thong tan lines he made me buy a months worth of tans, he watched me get dressed in girls work out short shorts and girls tops that say diva or princess on them , with bright bras underneath and pink lipstick and no wig , then go run errands like to the post office or bank exposing myself as a sissy making sure to take pics outside of them to prove i was exposing myself. making me call up on 3 way calling so he could listen as i called nail salons and made appointments using my sissy name to get my nails done making sure i prepay using my male name so i cant call and cancel. making me call to get my eyebrows waxed and shaped in a femine arch at a different salon everytime...then after i was off the phone he would call them back and tell them what he wanted them to do to me ,,, i didnt know he called them back ,, he would send me to the mall to get my ears pierced . then sent me to a tattoo parlor wearing a fem boy look with pink lipstick on and get my tongue pierced and buy a few tongue rings and barbells, and a large pink cock shaped one, a few weeks later I had to go there again and get my nipples pierced and gold rings installed, every time I went the girl at the desk laughed at me and told me most real men would never get there nipples pierced or wear lipstick , then a couple weeks after that I had to go back again and get my belly button pierced and buy a ring and a charm that says SISSY from the same girl so embarrassed , then my black master made me buy a cb6000s chastity device online one he picked out for me and watched me buy form his computer and he sent me his lock in the mail with no key , he made me get on web cam and open the ups box and beg to lock my clit up with his lock. he showed me the key in his hand, and now he owns my clit no more hardons no more cumming with permission ever . he started making me take a chemical castration pills that he sent me UPS he made me open it up on webcam and beg over and over again to take the pills so my clit would shrink and not get hard again. if i didnt he was going to make me get castrated by a doctor he knows . my black master my owner then sent me out again to the tattoo parlor and he sent a tattoo design too , he told me to prove im a black owned white sissy boy and get a Ace of Spades tattoo to be tattooed on my left ass cheek , and to get 2 small black panther paw prints on my chest ,buy then everyone in the tattoo shop knew I was a sissy fag and they asked me if I really wanted the tattoos , I told them yes I want everyone to know I love black men, my black master set up a paypal account with my creditcard and made me start buying stuff for him on his wish lists , i watched on my computer as he drained my bank accounts and he made me take out more credit cards in my name and have them sent to him. from different card companys , each day for a week he made me go online and apply for a different card , he then made me send him my tax forms from the last five years so he knew where all my money was , and made me change my direct deposit paycheck from my full time job to his bank account, and at my work he made me cash in my 401 k early all 80,000 dollars sent straight to his bank totally ruining me he made me get a second job on the weekend days at target so that i could earn more money for him and have every penny of my new job go right into his account by direct deposit , that way i never see a dime of my pay check, he made me watch on my computer as he made ads on Gay dating web sites and upload my pics and fill in all the info about me , my location , so I can hook up with gay guys in my town, I couldn't believe he was doing this , and meet them asap , for quick blowjobs ,he told me he knew I wasn't gay but he didn't care he was going to turn me totally gay and I will never get pussy ever again, I started to cry on web cam, he was laughing at me , he would make me watch as he logs in on these gay web sites and chat with guys in my town and tell the I was a sissy and I need to swallow a load right now , then he would send them my cell phone number and make me answer every call on speaker phone so he could hear me set up a date and time for me to suck them off. thats when he started making me pay a fag tax every week of 5 dollars for every cock i sucked and 10 for every time i got fucked, every week he would tell me how many strangers i had to suck off at xrated book stores or from craigslist ads he placed , there were lots of penaltes if i didnt suck off the right amount of guys , high interest rates, every week the amount of cocks i sucked off would increase,so i had to pay more and more .. my black master then started making more craigs list ads, back page ads, and adam for adam ads,for me ,making me meet strangers for blowjobs, then he found a few more adult book stores near me and made me go to the glory holes booths and suck off strangers and send him pics immediately almost every night sometimes right from one store to the next, then he finnally made me get fucked bareback only by multyple strangers no condoms that way my hole was full and my panties were full of cum , then he found a few gaybars by me and truck stops to go suck off real truckers , he made me buy a cell phone with GPS tracking on it so he could track everywhere i went .. all over town ,, so he knew if i was in the book store sucking off strangers for hours or at the tanning salon or at the truck stop or rest areas looking to be used as a cumdump sence he was a cop he found out were the real hookers in st louis would walk the streets and get picked up and arrested , he would make me get dressed up like a street hooker on web cam and make me take the bus down town to the block were the real hookers would pick up tricks and I would have to take pics outside a pawn shop and wear my Bluetooth ear piece and walk the streets while he talked to me telling me what to say to strangers when they pull over ,, he would make me charge 20 for a handjob and 30 for a blowjob, he would listen as I got in car after car sucking off strangers , he would make me stay out there for hours until I earned 200 dollars ,I was so scared I would get arrested and put in jail. he tracked me on GPS all night long so I couldn't get away. he next day made me go to best buy and get 8 survailince cameras and install them in every room in my house and install the softwear on my computer so that he can watch me on his computer at all times ,, even in the bathroom , about that time he made me call a doctors office on 3 way calling and make appointment to see a doctor he knew , I had to tell the nurse on the phone that I was a male looking for female hormones to start growing breasts and that I would like the earliest appointment I can get ,, I had to give her my male name and address and phone number so embarrassing, my master had already told the doctor I wanted the strongest expermintal female hormones they have and I wanted huge tits and big implants and my nipples to stick straight out 24/7 , I didn't know any of that when I went to see the doctor my master made me dress like a male fem faggot boy with a little lip stick and a pink bra under a womens sheer blouse and NO WIG , so everyone was looking at me , I had answer a few questions from the nurse and the doctor came in to see me he was a big black doctor and he pinched my nipples and told me I will make fine looking girl and me pulled out a niddle and injected something right into both of my breasts , and then he made me sign a lot of papers with out me reading them , and then he gave me a prescription for a 3 month supply and for me to take them 2 pills 3 times a day , and make another appointment for 3 months . my master made me start taking them right away and he made me start taking them on webcam and making me take more then the doctor ordered , and after 2 weeks my nipples were getting hard all the time and my breasts were sore and getting swollen he keep making me tell him how big I wanted my tits to be 36c and he would tell me that he wants them at least 38 dd or bigger and for them to look totally fake after I get my implants ?? after I earn enough money sucking off strangers walking the streets for implants he told me.. all this took about 8 months or so then my black daddy made me take out a second morgage on my house, each time i went to the bank i was dressed more and more girly ,my black master would make me dress on web cam the way he wanted me to dress a little femine then he would make me use skype on my way to the bank so that he can watch me then at the bank he made me were a blue tooth ear piece so he can tell me what to say to the female bank employee .so embarrassing, he contolled all my money now he made me shut off cable tv i was never home any more i was out sucking off strangers he made me walk into my kitchen and he made me throw out all my food , suger, flour , cookies, all canned goods , made me clean out my frig , nothing at all was in there , all my cabents were totally empty of every thing , no food in the house at all, he wanted me on a strick diet so I can lose 30 lbs, he sent me to the store to buy ramon nuddles only a months worth, thats all I was allowed to eat, ,i was on strick diet of ramon nuddles and cum form strangers . made me get on ebay as he watched then he made me upload pics of my car and sell it fast for cash and then send him the money fedx .then I had to cancel my car insurance, and then I had to cancel my heath insurance, i had to walk or take the bus to work now and and then I had to give all my male clothes away at goodwill ,except a few male work clothes, he gave me a small allowance each week my owner then made me buy a you tube of superglue , and then get dressed up in a bright pink bra and pink stockings and frostie pink lipstick , and then get on a live gay chat room and open my web cam and start following orders from strangers after 30 mins my master started sending me orders seat on a 9 black dildo and bounce up and down, after that he made me get the tube of superglue and show the camera it was brand new , then he send me a order for me to beg him over and over to squeeze the superglue into the padlock key hole on my chastity device , telling me to say how I am a loser white faggot and I don't need my tiny clit anyway and how I cant get hard anymore and how I wish I born a real girl , please master allow me to superglue your lock shut forever , I beg you over and over again,, after 10 mins , you finally give the order to do it ,, I put the webcam down next to my clit and squeeze the superglue right into the keyhole filling it up , after that my master started laughing at me and told me that now that ive proven myself to him that I quess he doesn't need to hold onto the key anymore and then he told me he was going to throw it into a lake today when he goes out .
two days later he made me get dressed like street hooker and beg him to allow me to cut up all my own credit cards up on web cam as he watched he made me tell him my real name and that I didn't need my credit cards any more because I don't know how to deal with money because I was a white sissy faggot and he laughed and showed me that he has the ones the bank sent him in his hands now . the bills kept coming to my house for every card he had , he would max out one and then make me call the card company on three way calling and i had to get the credit line incressed for that card , after i hung up he would laugh at me and tell me what a loser i was and how this was never going to end he was going to blackmail me forever and totally ruin me ,, the next day was friday and my black master made me call in work sick and get dressed like a bimbo cumslut. in bright pink micro mini skirt, white thigh high stocking bright pink 5 in open toe heels that are locked on , a pink and white crop top that has the words SISSY BOY on the front in glitter , i large black inflatable butt plug is in my ass pussy ,a red g string pulled up high and red 36 d cup bra that i have large filled water ballons , a leather collar on that says CUMSLUT.my make up is pink frosted lipstick, and red lip liner ,heavy black eyeliner and i have big pink plasic ear rings on, my hair is blonde and big , i have on 2in long pink finger nails and im holding my pink barbie purse. then he told me go outside and get in the car because today your going to the DRIVER LICENCE OFFICE and when i pulled up outside the office he made me put on my blue tooth ear piece and ordered me to go inside and get the form to legally change my name . now get out of the car and go get your sissy named changed FOREVER . he waited till i got the form and then he said to start filling out the form and wear it says new legal name he made me put SISSY PATTIE SWALLOWS . and then take a picure of the form and send it to him before i turned it in ...then after i turned it in i had to go get your new driver licence picture done . or he said he will email everyone on my contacts list your boss, your parents, and your x wife , all the pics of you sucking all those cucks and swallowing all that cum, do you under stand sissy faggot

2020.09.26 00:50 daboi [SF] "Chapters 1- 4" I've been reading too much Herman Hesse.

Chapter 1 -- Hannah and X
Grey and cool the air lingers, suffocating the moisture and heat with ash from the solar fires. September rolls from August and into October as the ocean continues onwards. Wakes that never meet yet part of the same current. These thoughts fill my head as I work waiting for something to happen. All action seems fruitless still the idea of standing still fills my head with thoughts of mediocrity. The planet is on fire and the galactic order crumbling with the pressures of a betrayed democracy. A plague runs rampant, silent, slow, and stagnant. Naturally, there has been no real solution to the ever present fear that we now live in. The fear of panic and chaos overriding all others. It is interesting how we would rather face death, than ourselves as a society… ughh but who am I to comment just another galactic citizen scraping the barrel for the leftovers that might feed me to continue to the next one. If I were to find a full one I would surely keep it to myself until there were only scraps for the others. Myself included would rather death then face the hypocrisy of my life, thus I live as do all those around me. Even as I try to distinguish as somebody, I am everybody else. The definition of normal. Where to be afraid is to be weak in the face of death. The show must go on as they say and on it has gone.
“Hey! What are you doing over there.”
The words pierce me as arrows would the wind.
I barely notice lost in my thoughts but, remember I gotta scrape the barrel.
“What?” I say.
“You want me to work faster? The Sirus crabs bite and I've already 4 fingers that barely move from every snap they’ve taken.”
Larry starts towards me. His fat rolls rumbling with every step, the beads of sweat from the artificial hanger atmosphere dripping, and his hair flopping to expose the bald spots that he neatly tried to comb into obscurity.
Beats languishing on earth I think to myself, as Larry comes across the floor with his smug face and energy of a manager that works only when he is “teaching”. Otherwise, he is happy to sit along the walls of the huge hanger gambling on his company pad.
The hanger sits on top of a space elevator over the planet of demetres. A place, where those who wish to leave behind the dead end of Earth go in search of galactic permits to get onto productive planets. The hanger itself opens directly into the universe, stars and galaxies outstretched as far as the eye can see... Basically the only perk of the job I think to myself... as I almost slide back into my own thoughts.
Larry grabs the large shipping container as tall as any of us. He pulls a crab out and quickly slides rubber bands onto the crustacean’s claws and mutated mouth which contains more teeth than I would care to count or know about. One of the crabs is worth more than an entire week of processing in the hanger. How I envy those Astro families who left earth first. Sure the first generations were almost entirely decimated but, Oh! if they could see how the survivors came to be paid dividends.
“Now that is how you do it! Larry exclaims. See you can do one every 2 seconds and I expect that or you are on the next ship back to earth.”
Every two seconds…
The shift change bell rings as relief comes over me.
“Looks like that is me Larry, and looks like your ganna have to wait another day to send me back home.”
A smile creeps over his face. He doesn’t really care about me or this. They just serve to pass the time. His shift is twice as long as mine. Something I do not envy, but alas the road to a permit is not promised so long hours are what create the seal.
“Hey! What are doing over there”
This time a warm voice. Much softer as it drifted.
“Waiting for you for you. Hooligan!! You’ve got to stop eavesdropping, it's not funny” I answer, still frustrated from the day.
Hannah thinks she is so clever and maybe she is. I’d like to think of her as lovely but, only in my moments of weakness. Really she is just as much an ass as I.
“Lighten up X we just got off and the bars down on the surface just came back on. Let’s go grab a drink and hope this isn’t the sun fire that will eventually envelope Demetres.”
The current fire has been unlike others yet, just like the rest. Labor planets are always like that, either too cold or too hot. Something has to be wrong with it or it would be an upper planet. They usually have some expiration date that no one seems to keep up with. What's the use? There are enough desolate planets and persons to not care. Demetres is supposed to be guaranteed for another 300 years but, if what happened on Phoenix is any indicator then there is no extent to the neglect in order to prolong the work for as long as possible. 3 million lives lost.
“Thinking too much again huh? Here’s an alcho-slug, slurp it up. Cheers!”
Without another word it goes down perfectly, like every night.
I look up at Hannah, her hay-colored blonde hair gleaming in the artificial light of the bar. Bags under her eyes and the folds of her face tired. Ash has built up to give her a rustic dirt look. Yet her eyes blue, intense, and wandering. A living relic of earth. A moment of weakness as I marvel at the beauty of the human in front of me. She does not buy new clothes as she rebels against the galactic order in her own way. We all do. Old world blue jeans only seen on earth with a tank top stained brown from the endless days of wear.
“When are we going to get out of here? We work and work but, not even close to a permit! Every night we drink only to repeat another day so that those on earth and the upper planets can live but, when will we be alive? I can’t be like Larry I won’t be!” I exclaim as I start to feel the slug hit.
Hannah rolls her eyes.
“Don’t be so melodramatic jeez don’t you ever stop? Besides I told you, I have a plan X, do you not trust me? A permit to the upper planets has nothing to do with work. I have been using my position as upper management assistant to hear some things that were never meant for my ears. Still upset at my eavesdropping?”
Intrigued I move closer as though there was anyone else in the bar besides the servobot.
“Word is that the fire really is getting out of control, 300 years my ass. A lot of the upper citizens here on management are getting ready to evacuate under the guise of the new season celebrations. The planet will probably be fine but, you know how the uppers are… always cautious. The point is two of them are unaccounted for. New uppers from across the galactic sphere. The logs show they arrived just a couple days ago but no one has seen or heard from them. I took the initiative to look further into it and I don’t think these people exist outside of their numbers.”
Nonchalantly she pulls two copied permit cards from her denim.
“They could kill you for that!”
“Oh so you don’t want one?”
“Your crazy, people will know we are not the uppers. Eventually, we will be found and put to death if we use those.”
“Yeah but, at that point we will be on an upper planet. You wanna wake up tomorrow and lose feeling in another finger?”
She had a good point. Demetres was doomed and those on it as-well. The propaganda starts to wear off after a couple of years and I had already lost count. But who were these phantom uppers and why were they not here. Was it a trap? Anxiously I start to twiddle my thumbs. Caught between a rock and a hard place. What was I to do? I had come to Demetres to reach the upper planets and now I hesitated.
“Hannah you know I trust you. It’s not a matter of trust but fear. Fear that i’ll end up worse off than I am now... if that is possible.”
“It’s not” she responds.
“I’m leaving early tomorrow morning with the rest of the uppers if you want to come meet me for one last slug before we go. You know we might never get another one of these.”
With that she gets up as she throws her cup of water in my face.
“Oh and if you don’t come you’ll never get another one of those either”
Chapter 2 -- Jackson and the Princess
The thing about wealth, power, and productivity is that you can get anything you want whenever you want it. Safe from every danger. The fires, the plague, and even the instability of life that threatens all. All except I. Born from the linen cloth of the universe, the royal family is righteous, regal, and necessary. All knowing and all producing. All life flows from, the courage of the blood of those who left earth, while all the rest were those whom prayed to their own egos for salvation. Lost in their lukewarm reassurance of gods, deities, and philosophers. No! Only the loss of self and ego saved those who spared themselves even in the face of death.. Likewise, I am the extension of such bravery embodied. Again and again the de facto greatness of my life has been told and retold to me. My potential reassured and tested over the entirety of my life. Yet, life has never taken a shot at I. The paradox being that the fighting fool finds more to life than the wise that has already fought and continues to live. One acts, while the other sits. One proves himself, as the other reassures. The mantle of victory, heavy on the generations that live victorious and the cliff of despair making weightless the triumph of flight.
“Hey! What are you doing over there” My poor body guard exclaims as he catches his breath.
“You are supposed to be playing you holo-fute not hijacking an interstellar craft with your spineless worm of a fiance. When your father hears of this...”
“I am right here” Jackson mumbles under his breath.
He is a tall slender man with almost not an ounce of meat on his bones. Black, slick, and straight hair hangs over his eyes. Robe being that of the deepest shade of the dark in the galaxy. such is customary for those who accompany the princess (her favorite color). Golden buttons admonish the otherwise elegant but plain robe out stretching from the man’s lanky fingers to his tiny calves.
“My father will hear nothing of this, remember your allegiance is to me first and foremost! You are mine, as I am my father, mother, great father, and great mother. There is nothing to tell for I am! And I already know. Do you understand? Or do you need a little reeducation on one of those labor planets you came from?”
With a wordless breath and an unseen grimace underneath his white mask, the guard inhales his pride. He knew there was nothing he could do. Now his job was to cover for the princess and the sake of the royal family. This was his duty.
“Now, get in Jackson. We are going to demetres.”
She had been off planet before. Heck, she had been all over the universe. Seen all the species, flowers, and mines. Nothing more diluting than those visits where she saw everything but, nothing. The real world not hidden. Yet, surely not revealed. Every person encountered, as predictable as the last. Scared and wanting for the ability to produce... to be me without I. Yet they knew nothing of me, only that I was there and they believed in what could be done for them. The earth, and labor planets ask endlessly what can be done for us and why are we not them. The cycle of inferiority (and superiority) that I will not allow to breed within myself. Power comes not from below or that which is above but, from that which is directly beside. Willing to live. Willing to not be caught between those and that which holds us in between.
Chapter 3 -- Two ships in the Night
“X get up! It's showtime” I hear Hannah's familiar voice come over the intercom. The massive housing units are tens of thousands of units stacked ontop of eachother. Used crab shipping containers reused to maintain mindless monkeys. The musky muddied air mixed with the smell of burning atmosphere creeping forward as pungent as ever.
So today is the day… a good day to die.
The constant multi-colored neon lights premiate my container as I dress myself trying to look my best in case anyone asks. Trying to play the part. Afterall in a couple of hours I would be an upper and any betrayal to that fact would prove plentifully painful. As I walk onto the crowded alleys the web of people and asphalt moving against the grain of dark matter spinning clockwise and counter. Wise in the way that it moves without being told. The upper planets must be exactly like this. a sweeping emotion of apathy drags over me as life equalizes beyond my life.
The sun above scorching as today is the closest it will ever be to the planet. Exactly why today is the day to evacuate. The most likely that the planet might blow up is exactly today. 3 minutes to be exact. What if right as we are leaving on the spaceship to wherever the final view is exactly that view of destruction. The reaper with a scythe of UV millions of miles in span and diameter. The shaft is exactly 3.82 millions decibels long. What a fantastic view. Terrifying and awe inspiring just as death’s twang should be.
walk, walk, walk, stop, walk, run, stop, talk, walk.
The door to the bar opens. And there she is, waiting with the slugs. There are two others in the bar this morning though. I can’t remember the last time anyone else was caught dead in this dive. Strange they do not look like they are from around here. regardless everyone minds their own business on demetres no one is looking for anything besides their own.
The man looks normal enough but, his dark robe certainty is simple yet elegant. not something you could buy here. More importantly the woman next to him, not impressive in any way, worth not a second look imminates an energy as strong as the rays burning the surface. In a way her energy compliments the day as it is. Regardless, I already have enough to think about.
“Hey Hey” I say as I approach Hannah. Picking up my slug in the same motion.
SCSCCRRARWWRRRRR the sound destroys any semblance of pleasantries. The sound of a galactic warship screams into the atmosphere.
The other two at the bar seem to have been rattled and are out of the bar beckoning to safety like bandits. Doesn’t matter. All that matters is getting to the ship and getting out. Right as we leave the safety of the bar I see Larry and his unmistakable body like a unique blob at the reach of my sight. Him and some labor muscle going to my door wondering why I am not on my shift…
“Princess!?? What are we doing? Jackson says recurving like bamboo in the wind. Those two at the bar could have been your father's men. They have already tracked us down! I thought that they wouldn’t be able to find us here.”
“That damned bodyguard!” the Princess exclaims.
“It is not a problem. Yes they know we are here which is quite unfortunate and unlucky. Never forget my love all negatives have their positive counterparts and the two are now very much alive through the opposite. We take what is given. My dear fiance, the truly unfortunate will be the lives of the soldiers here today left without answers for a father looking for his daughter. We already have different permit numbers ones that are of lowly persons. I shall go by Hannah from now on and you shall be X.”
“What type of name is that? Why could I have not gotten a normal name like you?”
Pipe up! It is not like I got to choose. It is a blessing that just yesterday these permit numbers were so easily transferable. It is strange but, so is this planet. There will be the labor union searching for us but, they are not looking for us you see. even if they look us in the eyes they will pass by looking for the poor souls which I do not wish to think about.
Suicide is common. The bodies are often lost in space but the assumption is always first desertion.
“Let's get to the common ports and find ourselves a shuttle to earth before anything else happens.” The princess whispers under her breath as she looks over her shoulder.
Chapter 4 -- Arrival
Earth, unlike the labor planets, is not a shit show. Rain falls from and to condescending and condensed drops. Slow at first only to inevitably multiply in volume and weight. Marking time in its rhythm. Making the plants and flowers breath as it has done for countless centuries. A far cry from when the planet was both the Earth and a labor planet. There was too much strife with the mixture. Even the rain, mountains, and prairies could not stop the conflict of human life and labor. Thus humanity and the earth itself were on the brink of destruction. Its people, hateful, as the planet was towards its stewarts. Mother nature, tender, patient, and nurturing. Turning on its own creation with the benevolence of the listed and the wrath of that which can only be described as of God. Ask who is God? and we have already encountered the answer. Volcanic explosions acting as underground meteors leaving craters created for the crisis of heretics. The Human condition, both a result and the divide between creation and creator. The duality which lazily creates units of living men and itself. The intellect and the animal. The oversimplification of that most complex. Alas most in need of the multi faceted universe are those which unit themselves (ourselves). A dual cycle of self conception and imagery only finding itself willfully broken and betrayed by the attack of the other. Two voices fashioned to argue. The conflict created as it is so. But, contrasting that duality in the face of the infinite dynamic self leaves only then the sound of the universe. The infinite hummm of the engine of infinite personality. The humman, being the sound of the infinite voice of candid continuity. The infinite voice of, every.. creeping.. critter...
From this understanding the earth was rebuilt to fulfill the understanding of conflict, of duality. In the face of the inability to recreate the balance of infinity the only resort is to accept the comforting cycle of human dualism without its counterpart. Take away that which argues back. The human experience without content. Either and both, the animal, the intellect, living on shamefully without the other. The reason and purpose for all being, suspended as an illogical fallacy looms, lingers. Limiting! life to a one dimensional experience. A further simplification that leaves any animal content, comfortable, and keeping of the single aspect left for it to lose... Intellect governs the earth now with the complete savagery of the animal, controlled and disposed of. If ever a dialogue were ever to start the conditions of the earth now mute it. Hunger, disease, lust, envy, pride, wrath and every other worthwhile witchery... unnecessary and perverse. The soul of humanity lost and longing within the comfort of life. The one way pedestrian pavement.

2020.09.25 21:48 dogeman87 I just found out why I’m an only child.

You know how it goes. They tell you you’re the perfect child. You were so perfect that they didn’t want to have any more. You’re smart, caring, sociable. Any goal they set for you is reached. Any goal you set for yourself is too high, but you reach it anyways.
I imagine that is how most only children feel at some point. My parents are wonderful people, and I think most of what they say about me is true, even if they tend to sugarcoat it. Now that I’m in college, I do some more questionable things that they might not approve of, but who doesn’t?
In truth, I’m not as perfect as they make me out to be. I’m an above-average student, but I’m not pre-med or engineering. I’m majoring in economics. I do well, I get solid A’s and a few B’s, and I’m active in a couple clubs. I still have no idea what I want to do in life, though.
I’ve only dated one girl, all the way back in sophomore year of high school. The relationship fell apart at the beginning of senior year. We split amicably, I think. Since then, I just haven’t found anyone. You know how it is, scrolling through Tinder and finding so many prospects but then realizing that all of them are either assholes or comically awkward.
Does it bother me? No. None of it does. I couldn’t care less if I’m dating or doing well in school. As long as I’m maintaining my GPA and having fun, classes don’t bother me. I go to parties, I hang out with friends, I smoke a bit of weed every now and then. I’m living the college life.
Well, I was. Then I had this conversation with my dad my freshman year. I’m a senior now. It seemed harmless enough. He asked how my week went, and I told him fine. I asked how he and mom were doing, and he said fine. He asked me what my grades were. Normal, I told him. A’s and B’s. He was satisfied.
Before he hung up, he admitted something to me. “Grant,” he said. “Have you noticed anything strange lately?”
I was dumbfounded. “No, Dad. What do you mean?”
“I don’t know.”
He left it at that, and I could only speculate what he had meant. He wouldn’t elaborate. He only told me to have a great rest of my day.
The next evening, he washed up dead on the riverbank.
*
After two weeks, the police gave up. They said the cause of death was drowning. The autopsy matched up, I guess. They don’t know who did it. The fact that there was foul play is obvious, because my dad was stripped of his wedding ring and clothes and he lived far away from the river.
I had to fly halfway across the country for the funeral. I ended up taking incompletes for my classes that semester. The day would not move fast enough. The services took forever. I don’t remember much, only shaking a lot of people’s hands and watching my mother fall apart. That was the hardest part, I think, watching her sob uncontrollably. Nothing is more disturbing than watching a loved one break down like that. It hits hard, harder than a punch or a knife to the gut. It twists your stomach until you can’t eat anymore, can’t sleep, or maybe you sleep for fifteen hours and still feel exhausted.
I don’t like to dwell on the funeral, so I won’t. I’ll let your imagination fill in the blanks. You can picture what it was like.
I returned to school the next semester. Everyone was sympathetic, but at the same time they gave me space. They knew I didn’t want to talk about it. What college student would? How weird would that have been, breaking down at a party or in the middle of class and talking about my dead dad? Normal, yes, but also embarrassing as hell.
Nevertheless, I found myself talking about it with some girl. I was drunk, way too drunk for my own good. One thing they don’t tell you at parties is how to pace yourself. College kids don’t have much tolerance for alcohol. A couple beers is all it takes to get wasted, for some of us.
I was a little different. I’m tall, over six feet, so I could take more than most. Still, I had only been to a handful of parties at that point. It only took a couple hours to lose self-control.
The girl was pretty. I remember that, though I don’t remember what she actually looked like. She consoled me for a while. I don’t remember why I was talking about my dad, either. I’m sure she had heard the story already. Word got around campus fast. She still listened.
I’m not sure how it escalated, but one thing led to another, and the next thing I remember she was sucking my dick in a closet. Sounds bad, I know, and it was. Not as bad as some of the other things, though. Someone had brought coke- thank God I didn’t go for that- and as we’d made our way to the back of the house, I saw a couple having sex on the couch. In the middle of the room. People were just walking around them like it was nothing.
At least I wore a condom?
Whatever. College is crazy. Case closed. Right?
I wish it were that simple. Thing is, after we had sex the girl, understandably, left me by myself. Probably went to blow some other guy. I went back into the main room, and that’s when things started to go to shit.
They were still doing coke. One of the guys offered some. When I declined, he pressed a straw into my hand instead. I told him he could go shove it. For some reason, the guy didn’t react. He just turned back to the table.
I knew I had to get out of there. Getting caught with alcohol is one thing. But coke? I could go to prison for that. I started extracting myself from the room when I heard it.
There was someone in the bathroom at the top of the stairs. They were whimpering. My first guess was sex, because I’d seen so much of it already that night. But there was only one voice, and the whimpers sounded like pain. Then there was a thud.
I knocked on the door. No response. I rattled the doorknob, and of course it was locked. Then I kicked the door in. The guy that I’d heard was on the floor. There was a little blood, but most startling was the pool of vomit and the guy’s facial expression. He looked dead. I checked his pulse, determined that he was indeed alive, then rolled him onto his side and pulled out my phone to call an ambulance.
That’s when I saw the shadow. It was so faint. I’m not sure how I noticed, really, except for the fact that it shifted. I looked at the shower curtain. Fear settled in my stomach then. I realized that I was in a room on the second floor, far from the rest of the party, with no one but the passed-out guy within calling distance.
The shadow was just from a headlight outside. I began to breath again. Then I felt the hand on my shoulder.
I tried to scream. Another hand slowly closed around my mouth. It was cold and leathery, and wet. I tasted what was probably blood, and I suspected it was from the hand. I began to hyperventilate, which, as you might have guessed, was a really bad idea when my airway was being blocked. I pretty much was asking to lose consciousness.
The hand that had grabbed my shoulder moved down my back. I felt what I can only describe as a tonguelike protrusion running over my neck. I trembled. I figured I was about to die. I would be lying on the floor like this guy, killed by a monster, and no one would find us until next morning at the earliest, and undoubtedly they would think I died the same way as him.
Amazingly, my first thought was of my mom. She couldn’t deal with another death in the family. She would lose it, as anyone would. That, more than the immediate threat that had presented itself, chilled me.
That’s when I ripped the hand from my mouth and screamed. The hand fell on the floor, disintegrated into dust, and I screamed some more.
Whatever had been behind me was gone. I knew it the second it left, because the room suddenly warmed up. I had not realized it had been so cold. Probably I had been too caught up in the moment. The temperature now was like a sauna in comparison.
I looked around frantically. I examined the walls, the ceiling, brushed back the shower curtain, peered carefully behind the toilet. There was nothing. I sat there on the floor for a while, waiting for the shadow and the monster to return. My skin crawled, thinking of that leathery hand on my mouth, the tongue leaving saliva on my neck.
If I had been doing coke, I could have chalked it up to a hallucination. But I’d been clean. I’d had a few beers, but at that moment I was pretty lucid. I was certainly more lucid than the guy on the floor.
I had forgotten about him, actually. I looked at my phone, which had fallen on the floor during my encounter with the shadow, and I picked it up. I dialed 911, told them what had happened, then left. The next morning half a dozen people were looking at drug charges in addition to underage drinking.
The guy that I found? He recovered. I think after that he didn’t go to any more parties. I don’t blame him. His blood alcohol content was .35, if I remember correctly. He should have been dead.
I didn’t go to many other parties, but for a different reason. My name had not been used in the paper, so my mom didn’t know. There was no pressure from her or anyone else, least of all the police, who chastised me but were happy that I did the right thing. No, it was the shadow that stopped me. I didn’t want to be in a place where everyone was drunk or coked out again, because if I was that shadow could return and probably kill me. I’m certain that it left because it thought others would find it. It was waiting for a time when I was alone.
Much better to stay home, in the safety of the dorms, with my two other roommates and the dozen others that were within earshot and sober. Much better to forget what had happened, chalk it up to stress or a laced drink, and go on with my life as I had before.
Thing is, it’s never that simple. I wasn’t able to forget about the monster, because that wasn’t the last time I saw it.
\*
My roommates were out, and I was by myself. That was the first mistake. Jason had gone to a D&D game. Richard had been invited to a party by one of the football players, somehow. He’s not athletic, not particularly impressive in any way, but he’s chill as hell. Everyone is his friend, which is probably how he got invited.
I wasn’t doing much. I was not alone, either. There were people on either side of my room, behind the walls, guys who were probably jerking off or playing video games. Me? I was reading a book. I know, not exactly what you would expect from someone my age. But I like reading. I especially like Stephen King (which may have been the wrong thing to read at that moment), and that’s what I was reading when I heard the noise.
I didn’t react to it. I figured someone was outside. We lived in suites, where four or five rooms shared a semi-private bathroom. It was a hell of a lot better than the bathrooms in other dorms, which were set up for entire floors. Here you could have some privacy.
The bathroom door closed. There was a loud grunt, then a plop. I sighed. It was probably Randolph. He takes the largest shits of anyone I have ever known. He can sit there for twenty minutes and keep dropping them. Usually we have to use the plunger or call maintenance when that happens. That night, though, would be different.
He gave out a yelp, and then I heard the door slam. I looked up. My door was partially closed, so I walked over to open it, and that’s when I saw him. He was slumped over on the toilet.
I ran over to him, ignored the penis in his hands, and checked for a pulse. He seemed fine. There were no wounds on him. He hadn’t moved, either, had obviously passed out on the seat. So how had the door been flung open?
I felt it again. The hand. It was on my arm this time. I would have let out a scream had it not clamped down. It felt like my bones were being grinded together. The pain was so immense that my vision flickered, and I could only whimper.
I was thrown back into my room. Somehow, I landed on my bed. Then I saw it. The monster was there, standing in the doorway. Perhaps demon is a better word. It was tall, maybe seven or eight feet, and it was completely black. I don’t mean black as in a black laptop or shirt or an xbox. This thing defied logic. It seemed to be so dark that light did nothing to illuminate it.
It had horns, antler-like but distinct in that they came from the side of its head and were not very long. The eyes were the worst. They were coal-black, with tinges of red where white should have been. And they were looking straight at me.
I did scream then. Someone said something in an adjacent room. The demon’s head whipped to the side unnaturally, like a kid whipping a pool noodle, and then it scrambled into the ceiling. Yeah, you read that right. It went into the ceiling, climbed up the walls like a drugged-up lizard and just phased through the tiles.
I didn’t move until the RA came over. He noticed Randolph first. Surprisingly, he did not make any snide remarks about Randolph’s dick. He called campus police before asking me what had happened. I told him. I asked if I would be in trouble. He said no way, because I obviously had not hurt Randolph. What had happened to him was a mystery.
Well, until the police arrived. They took him in, and I heard that he tested positive for MDMA. Ecstasy. I had not known him to be the druggie type. I mean, most college students experiment, but doing it in the dorm? It was asking for trouble. And Randolph was not stupid. He was a lot smarter than me, got a single B first semester and didn’t have to study as hard as most of us.
I wished he had been awake to see the demon. If he had been, of course, I suspect the demon would not have showed. It seemed to be fixated on me and me alone. It did not want to be seen by others. That was a comfort, I suppose, if not downright terrifying. There would be moments, I was sure, where I was forced to be alone. In the dorm or at a party or in a bathroom between classes… forgive me for the cliché, but the possibilities were endless.
So I told my roommates about what had happened. They didn’t get back until late that night, well after I had gone to sleep. I don’t know how I did. I guess I’m a heavy sleeper, is all. You kind of have to be if you want any rest in a dorm, at least one as rowdy as ours can get.
None of us had classes the next morning. Jason was skeptical, as he should have been. If he had told me about monsters and demons, I wouldn’t have believed him. Richard was more open to the idea, but he didn’t seem to care. He told me to chill out. I was too stressed, he said. Did I need to talk about what had happened last semester?
“It has nothing to do with that,” I snapped.
He raised his hands. “Hey, dude, don’t yell at me. I’m just trying to help.”
“Yeah,” I told him. “I know.”
“Then listen to me, man. You need to take a breather. When’s the last time you went to a party? Hey, you know what, I’ve got the perfect idea. I met this girl last night. Super hot and friendly. She’s your type. I think-“
“I’m not looking for a hookup,” I said flatly.
“What? You’re gonna turn down sex?”
I stared at him, and I think he finally got the message. He shut up.
“I have an idea,” Jason said. “What if we set up surveillance? I know a place where we can get hidden cameras. It’s not far from campus. I’ll get them after class Friday. If it doesn’t like being watched, like you say, then it shouldn’t bother you again.”
I knew Jason didn’t believe me. Still, the fact that he wanted to ease my nerves meant a lot. He’s not the most outgoing kind of guy. He’s a nerd, a chemistry student with a passion for chemistry and nothing else. He’s involved in academic extracurriculars only. I think he’s dated before, but I never learned the details. He doesn’t talk about girls. I only know that there’s this one girl in my English class, Jessica, who says he’s a creep.
We stuck to the plan. It wasn’t foolproof- I would find myself alone outside of the dorm eventually- but it was good enough. As it turned out, I would be by myself Saturday morning. Jason had a club meeting that for some reason had not been held during the week, and Richard was going on a date. He has unconventional good looks- long black hair, brown eyes, thin beard with just the right shape- and he’s smooth. Like, more smooth than should be humanly possible. He’s chill around us and chiller around girls, like he’s known them forever. They love that about him, how genuine he can be.
I begged one of them to stay. Jason told me, understandably, that he couldn’t miss the meeting. Richard was not about to ghost the girl he had been building a relationship with for the past month. Jason said I could always call for the RA or other guys in the dorm. I figured he was right. I also figured I didn’t want the demon to show up at all. Screw proving it to my roommates- I just wanted it to go away.
It didn’t appear until two hours after Jason left. Richard had already been gone for a while, had probably made his way back to the girl’s room. I heard it before I saw it. The demon made a slithering sound when it walked. I had not noticed before because it always appeared, never really moved across the room.
I looked up. You’d think seeing it two times before would make it less scary. You’d be wrong. Having a seven-foot, black-skinned behemoth with antlers and red eyes stand over you, it’s just too much. I screamed like a girl. I guess that time it didn’t get close enough to shut me up.
Its head darted toward the door, and for some reason I took my eyes off the thing. Jason was standing there with his backpack in his hand. His jaw had dropped so far open I thought he would shriek like one of those possessed people in horror movies. The demon skittered up the wall and through the ceiling.
We looked at each other for a while, neither of us speaking. He was still holding his backpack in one hand. I was halfway out of my chair, frozen, ready to spring up at the sight of another monster. Finally he dropped his backpack, and I fell into my seat.
“What the fuck was that?” Jason said. His words startled me. I almost never heard him swear.
“It’s what I told you about,” I said. Even as I spoke, Jason was climbing on the bed, reaching for one of the cameras, taking it down and hooking it up to his laptop. “Now you believe me?”
“I think I have to,” he said, laughing nervously. “Unless we’re both insane.”
He tinkered with his laptop for a while. When he started cursing, I walked over and asked what the problem was. He just pointed to the screen. I looked and saw the timestamp in the bottom left corner. Twenty minutes ago, about when he had walked in and saw the demon. The room was empty. Then I saw him appear in the doorway, flabbergasted, before climbing on the bed and taking down the camera. The footage ended there.
“It didn’t show up,” I said.
“We’re both crazy, after all,” he told me.
“No, we’re not. Think about it. Would a demon want to show itself? This is the first time someone else has seen it. If you hadn’t walked in when you did, I doubt you would have ever gotten your proof.”
He rubbed his chin. “You might be right.”
“You can’t tell me you think that was a hallucination. I told you about it earlier this week. How the hell do you explain seeing what I had already seen?”
“Yeah,” Jason sighed. “I just was hoping it wasn’t real.”
We talked about it for a while. He wanted to know exactly what had happened at the party. I wasn’t sure what good it would do, but I told him anyways. There was no harm in sharing. Besides, I wanted to tell someone. I had only mentioned the demon in vague details when I had first seen it. Telling the whole story, about how it had emerged from a shadow and almost suffocated me to death, that would have been a red flag for sure. Jason would have referred me to the counseling office.
We waited for Richard to get home. When he did, he was drunk on ecstasy or alcohol or both. I don’t mean the drug ecstasy, either. He was grinning stupidly, and I was sure he’d have some wild sex story to talk about. Before he could share, Jason started explaining rapidly what had happened, and he sobered up fast.
*
Richard hadn’t been skeptical from the start. Hearing Jason talk about the demon only made him more convinced. He wanted to summon it immediately and fight.
“We’ll be killed,” I told him.
“Nah,” he said. “I can call in some of my buddies. I think one of them, that football player that lives off campus? I think he has a gun.”
“Jesus, Rich,” Jason said. “You want to bring a gun into the dorm?”
He shrugged. “Would they blame us if we were hunting a demon?”
“Yes, they would,” I told him. “There are no guns allowed. Besides, the thing didn’t show up on camera.”
“Oh. Right.”
We hinged on a plan that admittedly had more flaws than a third-grade essay. Jason did some research. He had to go through the deep web, which I know nothing about, and he found some information. First, he determined that, from my description, the demon supposedly took away men’s fertility.
Had it killed my father?
I didn’t want to think about that. It hardly mattered what had happened, because the past would not change.
We didn’t really find anything on how to kill the demon. Jason had a few suggestions based on the show Supernatural, but I shot those down. I figured a fictional series would know nothing about real life. Unless those were real, he told me. I’d seen a little of the show myself, and I insisted that what I had seen was very different than a demon occupying a human host.
In the end, we had no idea what the hell we were doing. We just made a conglomeration of different precautions. Jason bought some salt, Richard brought a hunting knife (that, unlike a gun, might not get me expelled), I asked around and found out that most of my friends found me crazy. I understood. If one of them had come to me asking about demons, I would have acted the same.
Richard also asked some of his friends for help. Somehow, they believed him. I’m not sure if it’s because of Richard’s charisma or because he never lies or both. Whatever the case, he actually found someone who claimed to know a thing or two.
She was an old woman, and she met with Richard during the week. He came back and told us that the demon took the fertility of older men, then killed them. I asked why it was stalking me. He said they did not like leaving any descendants.
I think that’s when I realized: this thing had been hunting my dad. It seemed so obvious now. There are many, many people in the world that purposefully have one child. My parents, though? I knew immediately what had happened. This demon had stalked my dad. It had killed him, too, and now it, as Richard had said, wanted to finish the job.
That was when I stopped caring. I didn’t mind that what we were doing was crazy. I didn’t mind the possibility of a horrible death, because it was quite likely given our meager preparations. I was dead anyways, and that knowledge made me more confident in what we were doing, as strange as it may sound.
After my dad died, I was never angry. My mom was, for sure; she blamed the police for botching the investigation, when in fact there was absolutely no evidence for them to use. I had understood. My dad had been murdered, yes, but without a perpetrator I had not been able to direct any anger I might have felt.
Now it was different. I wanted to confront this demon and rip its eyes from its sockets. I wanted to send it back to Hell, or send it there for the first time if it had never visited, and let it suffer for all eternity. I couldn’t know if my dad was the only victim. He probably hadn’t been. Most of the time, the demon tended to pray on men that had no children.
I’m not sure how it made a mistake with me. I just knew that the mistake would be its last.
*
I was sitting on my bed, surrounded by salt, holding a knife and a bottle of holy water with Jason and Richard waiting down the hall. They had closed the door, and to make themselves inconspicuous they were pretending to work on homework. In reality, they were waiting for me to call for help, if I needed it. I suspected I would.
Richard had dug deeper into his network of friends. He had spoken to a mother of a friend of a friend who owned an antique shop. She apparently owned a ceremonial dagger from the Middle Ages. She allowed him to borrow it for a price, so long as he brought it back in good condition. I don’t think she knew what we were using it for.
I felt the demon before I saw it. The room grew cold. I don’t mean chilly, I mean cold, like those walk-in freezers. Jason likened it to a cold room he had used during research. I don’t know anything about those, but maybe the analogy is useful for someone else.
It still scared me. The tall black figure with its truncated antlers was so unnatural, I figured I would never get used to seeing it. When it appeared in front of me and reached out a hand- I noticed now that the hand was covered in dry, cracked, human skin- I wanted to scream. I didn’t. I reached out my knife and stabbed it in the arm.
It didn’t flinch. The hand kept moving and grasped my neck. I could feel the dry skin shed and fall down the front of my shirt. I wanted to gag. The roughness of the hand drew blood. Instead of freezing up, I managed to open my bottle of holy water and toss it.
That did something. The demon let out this whine that I can liken only to an electronic device. It backed up, and I tossed more water on its face. The skin started to melt. I thought I had succeeded, but then bone began to surface from beneath, forming what looked like a grinning animal skull that was gnashing its teeth.
I screamed then. Richard burst into the room and threw his knife. Somehow it landed in the demon’s chest. That’s what did it, I think. It screamed so loud I thought I’d lose my hearing. My ears rang, and Richard was saying something to me, but my attention was fixated on the center of the room. The demon had tripped over a particularly large pile of salt. It was melting, taking the floor with it, like we had dropped a bottle of acid. There was a hole next to my bed.
I ignored what he and Jason were saying. I kept my eyes on the floor, watching the hole widen. It stopped, and when I finally turned towards my roommates, an RA was staring at us through the open doorway, frozen in place, fixated on the same thing that I had been.
He must have also noticed the antlers next to the hole.
*
The official report said nothing. It could not determine what had happened in the room. The RA didn’t believe our story. No other explanations emerged, though. I was told that no acid could eat through the floor as quickly as the demon’s remains had. Thank God Jason still had cameras up, because they showed exactly what had happened, though without the demon it just showed a hole opening up in the carpet.
Richard lost the knife and had to fork over a whopping two thousand dollars. He told us it was a bargain. The item had been priceless, most likely, and the woman could have bankrupted him for losing it.
I haven’t been haunted by anything since that incident freshman year. I started going to parties again. Jason moved on, pretending that none of it had happened, but Richard had a fantastic story to share with people. Most didn’t believe him. Some egged him on. A choice few took what he said too seriously, offering him other demon-hunting supplies. He laughed them off, saying the problem had been dealt with, so they instead came to me and explained the seriousness of my situation. I shook them off, too. What was I supposed to do? Start stockpiling ceremonial weapons and holy water?
I never told my mom. She wouldn’t have believed me. She didn’t hear about what had happened in the room, either. The footage showed us doing nothing, only me staring at a bunch of salt as it started dissolving the floor. None of us got in trouble. They didn’t even care that I had a knife sticking out of the wall. I guess they were too preoccupied with the rest of the scene.
I wish I could give you some dramatic conclusion, a fight that lasted for hours or an epic chase. On second thought, I’m glad I can’t describe that, but the truth is that what happened was pretty simple. I tossed some water and Richard threw a knife. That was it. The whole thing took thirty seconds at most.
It seems that most things in life are anticlimactic. An exciting movie, a first date, graduation- once it’s over, you’re left with a certain emptiness, like whatever you just did shouldn’t have ended so quickly. They say time flies (I hate that cliché), but it doesn’t. What happens is we expect things to be greater than they really are. We imagine some grand outcome, beyond what reality can provide us, and it almost never goes that way.
I can’t know for sure that I will be safe for the rest of my life. I only know that I’ve gotten through college unscathed so far. If there is another encounter, it won’t end well, because I won’t be prepared this time. It will be different, surely, a more dangerous monster or just a surprise attack when I least expect it. I definitely won’t write another story about it, because I’ll probably be dead.
If you hear about some university kid that dropped dead of a heart attack or washed up in a river, it will probably be me.
